ADRIAN, Mich. – The short-handed Golden Eagles ended the weekend with a tough road loss at Siena Heights, falling in straight sets 22-25, 23-25, 23-25. CU drops below .500 for the first time since August with the loss as they are now 6-7, 1-2 WHAC on the year. Cornerstone will look to rebound with a huge rivalry game vs. receiving votes Aquinas on Wednesday inside Mol Arena at 7 p.m.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 0 Siena Heights - 3 (22-25, 23-25, 23-25)
Set One:
- In one of the hardest gyms to play in within the WHAC, Cornerstone got off to a slow start as Siena Heights took a 5-2 lead. Former WHAC Setter of the Year Aubrey Bates added a service ace in the run to give the Saints an early lead.
- A kill from Dyllan Hanna and an SHU attack error cut the deficit to two at 8-6.
- Back-to-back service aces by Macy Ward later tied the set at 10.
- Cornerstone took their first lead since 1-0 after kills from Jada Thomas and Kylie Barron, 16-15.
- The lead increased with a Dyllan Hanna kill.
- Siena Heights was clutch down the stretch, ending set one on a 7-3 run to win 25-22. Two service aces were recorded in the run along with two CU service errors.
Set Two:
- Once again in set two SHU got off to a great start. A block from Kinsey Wagner put them on top 6-2.
- The early Saint's lead moved all the way to 10-3 on a Jessica Holsapple service ace.
- Cornerstone tried to fight back, recording a 5-0 run later in the set on the Kylie Andras serve. CU trailed 18-14 after the run.
- A few points later, Cornerstone added another 5-0 run on the Emma Whitley serve. Kylie Barron added two huge kills in the run and CU was suddenly down by just two.
- Hannah Giere added a kill to bring the deficit to just one, but it would not be enough as Taylor Wegener recorded the set point kill to take it 25-23.
Set Three:
- Siena Heights again started strong which was the story of the match. A block put the Saints on top 6-3 early.
- Cornerstone got back to their blocking ways with a big one from Aubrey Lenz and Eliza Thelen to cap a 3-1 run.
- After trading points throughout the third set, Siena Heights was able to pull away again with a 4-0 run to lead 17-12.
- Cornerstone was unable to complete the comeback though, falling 25-23 in set three on a kill from Kadie Carsten to take the match and earn their first WHAC victory of 2023.
