GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone took to the court on Tuesday evening to take on their cross-town rivals from Aquinas. The Saints entered the contest receiving votes nationally and were riding a 15-game winning streak. Cornerstone, ranked 22nd in the nation, came out on top by a score of 3-0 to take sole possession of first place in the WHAC. The win brings Cornerstone's record to 15-2 overall, 11-1 WHAC as they begin preparations for a weekend back-to-back inside Mol Arena with Siena Heights on Friday night and Indiana Tech on Saturday afternoon.
Game Recap: Cornerstone 3 – Aquinas 0 (25-13, 32-30, 25-15)
- Cornerstone jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first set, with four of those points coming from Bailey Cummings kills.
- After holding an 18-13 lead, the Golden Eagles closed out the set on a 7-0 run to win 25-13.
- Neither team held a lead greater than two points for the entirety of the second set.
- Cornerstone had two chances to seal the middle frame after leading 24-22 but Aquinas prevailed in both points to force extras.
- Aquinas had a shot to claim the set up 25-24, but Jackie Stanko stifled that effort with a kill to make it 25-25.
- There were eight total chances – two from AQ and six from CU – to end the set but the action continued until a kill from Alexis Angus put Cornerstone on top 32-30.
- After trading points early in the third set, the Golden Eagles used an 8-1 run to build their lead up to 18-9.
- A block from Alexis Angus and Bailey Cummings pushed Cornerstone's lead to 21-12.
- Cornerstone took the final four points of the third set to win 25-15, completing the 3-0 sweep.
