LANSING, Mich. – Not many games start with a 12-minute 29-0 scoring run, but men's basketball did just that on their way to a 73-40 victory over Cleary. The defense of the Golden Eagles held Cleary to 23.8% from the field on their way to winning their second straight game.
Cory Ainsworth led the way with his second straight 20-point performance to go with nine rebounds. Cornerstone is now 7-6 (3-4) on the year as they head to Siena Heights on Saturday, January 6 for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 73 Cleary - 40
- First Half
- The Golden Eagles opened the game on a 6-0 run that forced Cleary to call a timeout as Cornerstone found easy baskets around the rim from Jack Joldersma and Cory Ainsworth.
- It continued to be all Cornerstone to start the game as they now lead 16-0 after the first eight minutes of the game. Luke Rowlinson had seven points as Connor Dykema gets a basket around the rim.
- Kayden Bird drills a three and Cory Ainsworth follows that up with back-to-back layups to extend the Cornerstone lead 29-0 with 8:37 remaining in the first half.
- Cornerstone held Cleary scoreless for the first 12-minutes of the game before they scored their first basket of the game off an inbounds play to make it 29-2.
- It continued to be easy to score for the Cougars as they used a 7-0 run as Cornerstone has started to slow down on the offensive side of the floor.
- Connor Dykema ends that run with a top of the key three as Luke Rowlinson follows that with a layup next possession.
- Cleary outscored Cornerstone down the stretch 19-14 as the Golden Eagles head into halftime leading 43-19.
- Second Half
- Cornerstone used the first three minutes to use a 5-0 run that was all scored by Luke Rowlinson to extend their lead 48-19.
- It was a slow start for both teams to start the second half as Cornerstone leads 50-25 with 13-minutes remaining in the second half.
- Cornerstone saw a 6-0 run that was highlighted by Cory Ainsworth scoring four of those to make it a 56-26 game.
- Kayden Bird drills back-to-back threes as Mason Brooks follows with a fastbreak layup, making it a 64-28 Cornerstone lead.
- Andy Mora drills a corner three to end a Cornerstone drought as Tre Seydel comes in and scores four quick points.
- Levi Schultz ends the scoring for the Golden Eagles with a reverse layup as Cornerstone rolls to a 73-40 victory.
