Men’s Basketball falls 68-49 to Aquinas on Senior Day

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles could not find the bucket on Senior Day scoring a season low 49 points on a season low 31% from the field. CU would fall 68-49 to their rival Aquinas to drop both matchups on the year. The loss moves Cornerstone to 15-10 on the year and 9-8 in WHAC play as they will end the season on a three-game road trip starting at Siena Heights on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Game Highlights:

First Half:
  • Cory Ainsworth got things going early, scoring four of the first six points as CU and AQ sat tied 6-6 three minutes into the game.
  • Aquinas then started to get going offensively with an and-one and three from Donovan Brown-Boyd to lead 12-8.
  • Menalito McGee later hit a three for Aquinas to go up 24-17 with 7:12 to go in the half.
  • Trailing by nine, Cornerstone started to chip back into the game with a pair of layups from Cory Ainsworth and Trent Summerfield to make it 26-21 and force an AQ timeout.
  • A 10-2 run later in the half capped off by an Eli Steffen layup tied the game at 31.
  • Aquinas ended the half on a 7-0 run to lead 38-31 at the break.
Second Half:
  • Everything fell apart in the second half for the Golden Eagles, scoring just six points in the first 10 minutes of the period to fall behind 47-37 in the very defensive game.
  • Eli Steffen hit a layup to end a four-minute CU scoring drought.
  • Aquinas then went on a 13-0 run to take full command of the game with a 60-39 lead.
  • Cornerstone had no answer as both teams would go to the deep bench in the final minutes as CU fell 68-49 shooting a season low on the day.
