Men's Basketball's offensive outburst sees them blow by UM-Dearborn 120-85

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – It was a game that men's basketball needed as they used their offensive outburst to blow past UM-Dearborn 120-85. It was the first time Cornerstone scored 120 points since the 2015-16 season as they scored 120 against Marygrove. Cory Ainsworth led the way in scoring for the Golden Eagles with 21 as every Golden Eagle but two, score on the night. Cornerstone also had a season high five dunks on the night with one poster by Blake Stewart. CU shot 60% from the field on 35 assists for the game. They will now head to #1 Grace (Ind.) for one more contest before Christmas break on Tuesday, December 19.
 
Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 120 UM-Dearborn - 85
 
  • First Half
    • Five seconds into the game and UM-Dearborn finds themselves winning 3-0. Cory Ainsworth would then answer right away with a bucket on the other end.
    • Cory Ainsworth continued to do all the work for the Golden Eagles as he has scored the first 10 points for Cornerstone. CU leads 10-7 through the first four-minutes.
    • Cornerstone forced UM-Dearborn to use one of their timeouts after a 7-0 run from Cornerstone extended the lead to 19-8. Kayden Bird drilled a three and Toby Woolcock had a finish around the rim.
    • Blake Stewart capped off a 9-2 Cornerstone run with a rim rattling dunk to make it a 28-12 Cornerstone lead. Kayden Bird had five points during the run.
    • Eli Steffen scored six-straight points for the Golden Eagles with a nice fancy finish around the rim as it continued to be all Cornerstone in the first half, 36-21 with eight-minutes remaining.
    • Toby Woolcock made two-straight threes as Kayden Bird would follow that up with a three of his own as CU leads 51-30 with three-minutes to go.
    • Cornerstone heads into halftime with 57-34 lead in an offensive outburst.
 
  • Second Half
    • Michigan-Dearborn came out aggressive to start the second half with a 6-2 run but still find themselves down by 19.
    • Eli Steffen and Luke Rowlinson keep trading baskets with one another as Cornerstone continued to get anything they wanted on offense. 70-44 Golden Eagles.
    • Connor Dykema finished the three-point play. Next possession Andy Mora gets fouled and nails a pair of free throws to make it 80-52 Cornerstone with 13-minutes remaining in the second half.
    • Cory Ainsworth used a spin move on his defender and dunks it home to get the crowd roaring. Next possession, Blake Stewart throws down his second dunk of the game on the UM-Dearborn defender to put an exclamation point on the run Cornerstone has been on. 96-71 CU with eight minutes remaining.
    • Bryce Nyboer made a three, Eli Steffen completed the three-point play, and Luke Rowlinson made another three to force UM-Dearborn to call a timeout after a quick 9-0 run.
    • Aiden Gortmaker gets to the line and makes both free-throws as Trenton Boike gets into the scoring party with a three of his own.
    • Luke Vanderwerff cleans up the offensive glass and makes an easy layup. Levi Schultz uses a backdoor cut and slams a two-handed dunk home to get into the dunk party for the Golden Eagles. 118-80 CU with two-minutes remaining.
    • Levi Schultz dunks it home again off the missed layup to put the exclamation point on the game for the Golden Eagles as they win 120-85.
