Men’s Basketball suffers tough road loss at receiving votes Indiana Tech

FORT WAYNE, Ind.  – Cornerstone had a chance to tie the game in the final minute, but was unable to do so falling 85-80 at receiving votes Indiana Tech Monday evening. Indiana Tech held the lead the entire second half, as the two teams have now traded wins in the last seven meetings. With the loss, the Golden Eagles move to 7-4, 4-2 WHAC. CU will return home on Wednesday to take on Concordia at 7:30 p.m. this Wednesday, February 10. 

What you need to know? 
  • Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, as a bucket was not scored until nearly two minutes into the game when Cory Ainsworth hit a layup. 
  • Indiana Tech went on a 6-0 run to go on top 6-2, then the three ball began to fall. Carter Nyp netted two deep balls to give Cornerstone the 8-6 advantage. 
  • Once again Indiana Tech got the six-point advantage but a Trent Summerfield and Riley Costen three tied the game at 16 with 11:56 to play in the half. 
  • The lead would change hands five different times over the next four minutes of play. 
  • Indiana Tech outscored Cornerstone 18-13 in the final eight minutes of play to lead 44-39 at the half. IIT went 6-9 from deep while CU went 4-13 which proved to be the difference at the half. 
  • Buckets from Christian Rodriguez, Cory Ainsworth, and Riley Costen quickly cut the Golden Eagle deficit to two at 47-45 in the first two minutes of the second half. 
  • Indiana Tech's Jeremy Luciani capped off a Warrior 6-0 run that brought the CU deficit back to six, 55-49. 
  • The Warriors increased the advantage to its largest at eight with 13:10 to play on a Rog Stein jumper. 
  • A Cory Ainsworth jumper brought the game back to just four, but Indiana Tech immediately responded with a 7-0 run highlighted by a Cory McKinney and one making it an 11-point game at 66-55. 
  • Cornerstone refused to go down without a fight, going on a 7-0 run of their own that saw Carter Nyp's third three of the game bringing the deficit back to three, 70-67. 
  • With 4:12 to play Cornerstone cut the IIT lead to as low as two on a pair of Christian Rodriguez free throws. Over the next two and a half minutes CU would get within two points on three separate occasions. 
  • Cory Ainsworth continued his strong game scoring the game tying bucket with 1:11 to play to make it 79-79. 
  • CU had a chance to take the lead for the first time in the second half, but turned the ball over and fouled Indiana Tech's Grant Smith who hit a pair of free throws to go back on top 81-79. 
  • After a timeout, Riley Costen got into the lane and drew a foul for a chance to tie the game back up at 81, but went 1-2 at the strike. 
  • CU was forced to foul with nine seconds remaining. Indiana Tech hit both free throws to increase the lead to 83-80.
  • Smartly, Ted Albert and the Warriors chose to foul while up three putting Drew Knickerbocker at the line for the one-and-one. Knickerbocker missed the first which resulted in another quick foul by the Golden Eagles. Grant Smith buried the free throws to seal the game as Indiana Tech held home court and earned the 85-80 win.  
 
By the Numbers 
12/12 – Senior Kyle Hayes recorded his third career double-double with 12 points and a season high 12 rebounds. 
21 – Cory Ainsworth scored 20+ points for the second time this season with 21. 
3/5 – Carter Nyp hit three of the Golden Eagles five threes in the game. 
60% - Cornerstone shot 60% from the free throw line, going 9-15. 
7 – The lead changed a total of seven times in the game. 
 
What's Next?
Cornerstone returns home from their three-game road trip on Wednesday to take on Concordia at 7:30 p.m.
