No. 1 Men's Basketball overcomes slow start to down UM-Dearborn 75-72

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The host Wolverines of UM-Dearborn raced out to a 10-0 lead just 2:45 into the game on Wednesday night but CU responded with a 22-4 run and the No. 1 ranked Golden Eagles held off a late rally to pick up a 75-72 victory. The win is the 16th straight for Cornerstone as they are now 16-1 overall and 9-0 in league play. CU will remain on the road when they face rival Davenport on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Game Flow
UM-Dearborn came into the game having already beaten two Top-20 league foes in Davenport and Indiana Tech and they opened the game on fire, racing out to a 10-0 lead. Cornerstone, which has won its last 11 regular season road games, stayed composed and responded with 12-0 spurt finished off by six straight points from Kyle Steigenga. The run continued for CU as they would eventually lead by eight (22-14) after a triple from Cory Cox and the Golden Eagles went into the locker room up 36-30.

The Wolverines again came out hot to start the second half but CU maintained a slim lead and with 13:33 to play were up 50-43. UM-Dearborn then used a 7-0 run to tie the game up and for the final 11 minutes, there were three lead changes and four ties. UMD held a 60-56 lead with 8:11 to play but six straight points, three from a trio of FT's from Cox and CU never trailed again. Sam Vander Sluis gave the Golden Eagles a 5-point cushion with back to back buckets and the Wolverines were forced to foul down the stretch with CU hitting enough to hold off the rally and upset bid.

Say What?
"It is nice to continue our success on the road during this stretch. We did not play our best at times tonight but still continued to battle and grind out a tough win on the road. Proud of our guys and we will be back at it tomorrow ready to get better." Assistant Coach Ted Albert
