GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The nationally ranked #13 Golden Eagles' momentum cannot be stopped. The rematch of February 23's match vs Saint Mary-Woods in Grand Rapids Mich. is swept once again by the Golden Eagles as they take the first set 25-16, the second set 25-22, and the third set 25-17. The Golden Eagles' unbeaten streak advances to 9-0, the best start in program history. Up next for the nationally ranked #13 Golden Eagles, Cornerstone University will venture south to Mishawaka, Ind. to take on the Bethel University Pilots in the Weikamp Athletic Center at 7 p.m.
Game One Recap: #13 Cornerstone – 3 Saint Mary-Woods – 0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-17)
Set 1
- The first set gets underway with a point by the Pomeroys. The score is 1-0.
- A couple kills from Hubert Sliwinski and a service ace by Patrick Voloch and Ernest Broaster gives Cornerstone the lead in the first set 4-2.
- Freshman, Josiah Reif, gets his first kill of the match to extend Cornerstone's lead 5-2.
- The block from Josiah Reif and Hubert Sliwinski helps build the Golden Eagles. They still lead 8-2.
- Two kills, one through the block, from Landon Waltz keep the Golden Eagles flying high. Cornerstone keep building their lead 10-3.
- A few blocking and attack errors by the Golden Eagles sees their lead fall, still leading 14-8.
- Landon Waltz nets another kill to make the score 16-9 Cornerstone lead.
- Hubert Sliwinski's kill through the block keeps the Golden Eagles in a dominant lead 19-10.
- A few attack errors by the Golden Eagles see the gap between the two teams close a bit. Cornerstone University still lead 23-15.
- Josiah Reif's kill from the backrow sees the first set end. Cornerstone take set one 25-16.
Set 2
- The second sets begins with a service error and an attacking error by the Golden Eagles. Saint Mary-Woods goes up 3-0 early on.
- The Pomeroys extend their lead 5-0 in the second set.
- Two blocks from Ethan Walker and Josiah Reif grab a few points for the Golden Eagles. Saint Mary-Woods still lead 6-4.
- Landon Waltz with a couple kills inches Cornerstone closer. They still trail 7-6.
- Bruno Peres takes advantage of the overpass to tie the second set 11-11. He follows that up with a kill to tie the set again 12-12.
- The set stays tight, as Landon Waltz gets another kill of his own to keep the set 14-14.
- Kyi Jagorin's pancake pass gives the Golden Eagles the opportunity they need to take the lead in the second set 17-15.
- Bruno Peres' kill off the block keeps Cornerstone in the lead late in the second set 20-17.
- The block has nothing on Max Hernandez, as he bounces the ball to make it 21-18 Golden Eagles.
- The second set ends with a service error from the Pomeroys which sees the Golden Eagles take the set 25-22.
Set 3
- Set three gets underway with a couple errors by the Golden Eagles and Saint Mary-Woods. The set begins tied 1-1.
- Landon Waltz keeps the kills coming to keep the Golden Eagles in the lead 5-4.
- A long rally ends with a block from Josiah Reif and Joshua Beaumont, followed by two service aces from Jackson Bush to extend Cornerstone's lead 11-6.
- Another service ace from Jackson Bush sees Cornerstone's lead build even more, as they lead the third set 12-6.
- The block from Ernest Broaster and Joshua Beaumont is too much for the Pomeroys. The Golden Eagles still lead 13-8.
- Patrick Voloch grabs a service ace of his own to make the lead 15-12.
- Ernest Broaster watches the Pomeroys' attack sail out of bounds. Cornerstone still in the lead 17-13.
- A mistimed attack from Saint Mary-Woods sees the Golden Eagles extend their lead 20-14.
