Murphy records a season high in kills as Women's Volleyball takes down Lawrence Tech 3-1

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Women's Volleyball welcomed Lawrence Tech for their first of two home matches this week and came away with a 3-1 victory. Aubrey Lenz spred the wealth this match as she recorded 55 assists as Emmalee Murphy (20), Aubrey Johnson (16), and Gabby VerBerkmes (13) all recorded double-digit kills. The win moves Cornerstone into sole possession of the fourth seed in the WHAC Standings as they will honor their seniors on Friday in their final regular season home match as they take on Rochester Christian at 7 p.m.

First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lawrence Tech - 20
  • Lawrence Tech jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over the Golden Eagles thanks to two attack errors from Cornerstone.
  • Kills from Aubrey Johnson and Gabby VerBerkmoes tied the match at four early in the first set.
  • Lawrence Tech used a 4-1 run to extend their lead 12-8 over the Golden Eagles as they have used the errors of Cornerstone.
  • The Golden Eagles continued to struggle early as they were forced to call a timeout to regroup as they find themselves down 15-10.
  • Right out of the timeout, the Golden Eagles responded with 5-0 run to tie the match at 15 thanks to two service aces from Payton Hutchinson to highlight the run.
  • The Cornerstone run continued as Lawrence Tech called their final timeout of the set as Payton Hutchinson recorded another ace as Gabby VerBerkmoes also had a kill to make it 18-15.
  • The run reached 12-straight points before the first Lawrence Tech point as the Golden Eagles now lead 22-16 late.
  • After a small Lawrence Tech rally, the Golden Eagles responded well with a kill from Emmalee Murphy to take the first set 25-20.
 
Second Set: Lawrence Tech – 25 Cornerstone - 22
  • The Golden Eagles and Blue Devils battled to open the second set as the set is tied at three after a Lawrence Tech error.
  • An Aubrey Johnson kill gave the Golden Eagles the lead as Gabby VerBerkmoes followed with a block to make it 8-5.
  • Lawrence Tech responded with a nice run to tie the set at 11 after a service ace.
  • The Blue Devil run continued as they have outscored the Golden Eagles 10-4 to take a 15-12 advantage.
  • The Cornerstone struggles continued as Lawrence Tech continued to push the pressure on the defense of the Golden Eagles as they lead big 19-13 late.
  • Another kill from the Blue Devils forced Cornerstone into their final timeout of the set as they lead 21-15.
  • Out of the timeout, the Golden Eagles responded with a 4-1 run highlighted by kills from Emmalee Murphy and Kylie Barron to make it 22-19 as Lawrence Tech called a timeout.
  • Lawrence Tech responds in the second set with a 25-22 victory to tie the match at one.
 
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lawrence Tech - 22
  • Lawrence Tech jumped out to an early 4-2 lead thanks to a few kills.
  • The Blue Devils continued to take advantage of Golden Eagle errors early in the third set as they lead 9-5 after a block.
  • The Golden Eagles continued to chip away at the Blue Devil lead as back-to-back Aubrey Johnson kills made it 11-9.
  • A 3-0 Lawrence Tech run forced the Golden Eagles into their first timeout of the set as they have grown lead to 15-11.
  • Out of the timeout, the Golden Eagles used a 4-1 run to make it 16-15 thanks to a block from Kylie Barron and Emmalee Murphy.
  • Cornerstone ties the set 18 thanks to kills from Aubrey Johnson and Gabby VerBerkmoes.
  • A big dig and kill from Aubrey Johnson sees the Golden Eagles take a 21-20 lead as Lawrence Tech called a timeout.
  • The Golden Eagles continued to work as a team late as Emmalee Murphy recorded a kill to end the rally in favor of Cornerstone as they lead 24-21.
  • The Golden Eagles take a 2-1 set advantage with a third set 25-22 victory.
 
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lawrence Tech - 18
  • The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 4-1 lead thanks to kills from Emmalee Murphy and Gabby VerBerkmoes as Aubrey Johnson added a service ace.
  • Lawrence Tech was forced into their first timeout as a service ace from Olivia Endris made it an 8-3 Golden Eagle lead.
  • The Golden Eagles continued to hold onto their early lead as Gabby VerBerkmoes made it 12-8.
  • Middles Kylie Barron and Gabby VerBerkmoes record back-to-back kills as Lawrence Tech called their final timeout as Cornerstone leads 17-10.
  • It continued to be all Cornerstone in the fourth set as a service ace from Emma Whitley and a kill from Kylie Barron made it 20-10.
  • A late Lawrence Tech run made it a 22-16 Golden Eagle lead late in the fourth set.
  • Aubrey Johnson and Aubrey Lenz put the final touches on the fourth set with a kill and service ace as Cornerstone wins the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
