GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles had no answer for a tough Siena Heights squad falling in straight sets at home for their second consecutive loss. CU is now 10-12, 5-7 WHAC on the year and will look to rebound tomorrow with Senior Day vs. Lourdes at 2 p.m. Cornerstone will honor one senior in
Kylie Andras.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 0 Siena Heights – 3 (16-25, 14-25, 19-25)
Set One:
- Cornerstone scored the first three points of the first set with two Siena Heights attack errors and a Emma Whitley service ace.
- Back-to-back kills from Kylie Barron and Aubrey Lenz then increased the Golden Eagle lead to 6-2.
- Siena Heights then responded with an 11-2 run that forced a Golden Eagle timeout. SHU held a 13-8 lead at the timeout.
- Gabrielle VerBerkmoes recorded a kill to end the run, but SHU responded again right away. The Saints scored four more in a row to double up the Golden Eagles at 18-9. Aubrey Bates recorded an ace to cap the run and force the second CU timeout.
- Despite some big kills from Kylie Barron and Hannah Giere, Cornerstone could not put a run together to comeback. CU would fall 25-16 on a Taylor Wegener service ace for set point.
Set Two:
- In set two Cornerstone changed the lineup looking to find a spark, as Dyllan Hanna started in the rotation.
- Siena Heights found a way to get out in front despite the change, using a big solo block from Kinsey Wagner to lead 7-3.
- Cornerstone would use their first timeout of set two trailing 10-4 after a kill from Devyne Eisenhauer.
- After the timeout, Gabrielle VerBerkmoes stuffed the Siena Heights attack to score the first point once play resumed.
- An Alli Pickard service ace brought Cornerstone within two and forced a Saints timeout.
- After the timeout, Siena Heights rattled off five points in a row to increase their advantage to 16-9.
- Cornerstone had no answer after the timeout as errors would cost them. CU fell 25-14 in set two.
Set Three:
- The Golden Eagles found a little spark early in set three, with Kylie Barron recording a trio kills to keep things within one point.
- A Siena Heights service ace put the Saints on top by three for the first time in set three, 11-8.
- Emmalee Murphy returned to play in set three and recorded two big kills that brought Cornerstone back within a point at 14-13.
- Aubrey Bates continued to find success for the Saints with the dump kill, helping SHU to a 3-0 run that brought their lead to 17-13. CU would use a timeout.
- Siena Heights went to the bench holding a big lead, but Cornerstone started to find their way back. It would not be enough though, as the Golden Eagles dropped set three 25-19.
By the Numbers:
9-3 – Cornerstone lost the ace battle 9-3 on the match.
