LIVONIA, Mich. – Why not 27 in a row? The Golden Eagles continue to find the win column, clinching at least a share of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) 2022 Regular Season Title with a road sweep at Madonna. Cornerstone is now 27-3, 18-0 WHAC on the year as they return home tomorrow for a 1 p.m. match with Concordia with the opportunity to clinch the WHAC Title outright.
Game Recap: #21 Cornerstone – 3 Madonna – 0 (25-18, 25-20, 26-24)
- Power came from the very first attack for the Golden Eagles as Kaylee Dykema put away an overpass for the first point of the game.
- A kill from Rylie Walters capped a 4-0 run to put CU on top 13-9 in the middle of the first set to force Madonna into their first timeout.
- Madonna struggled on the serve allowing Cornerstone to maintain a multi-point advantage for the remainder of the first set. A service error gave CU set point to take set one 25-18.
- Madonna was able to capture an early lead at 8-7 in set two on a service ace.
- Olivia Keelean and Kaylee Dykema combined for a block to cap off a 3-0 run to put CU back on top 13-10.
- Aubrey Lenz recorded a service ace to increase the lead to 17-12.
- A dump kill from Aubrey Lenz helped Cornerstone secure set two, 25-20 as they did not relinquish the lead after the score was tied at 10.
- Aubrey Lenz continued to dominate in set three with yet another dump kill and service ace to put CU on top 6-4.
- Madonna responded well with a 4-0 run that saw three kills to go on top 12-9.
- A resilient Cornerstone team would not let the Crusader lead stay for long however. Sophomores Kylie Barron and Kathryn Detweiler would record back-to-back kills to tie set three at 18.
- After tying it, Madonna scored two quick points with a CU attack error and a big block from Kacie Stoneburner and Jaeda Porter that forced Cornerstone to use a timeout.
- Again, the resilience showed through as Rylie Walters recorded a service ace to tie the set at 22 and force the Crusaders into a timeout.
- The seniors would then seal the deal for the Golden Eagles with Kaylee Dykema recording a kill followed by two more from Olivia Keelean to take set three 26-24 and earn the match sweep.
