GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Two of the top three service teams in the WHAC took the floor against each other on Friday night and the Golden Eagles prevailed in a four-set victory over UNOH. The two teams combined for 18 service aces, as Cornerstone recorded a season second best 10 on their way to their 24
th consecutive victory. CU is now 24-3, 15-0 WHAC as they will face a tough Indiana Tech team tomorrow at 1 p.m. to close out the home stand.
Game Recap: #22 Cornerstone – 3 UNOH – 1 (25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16)
- Cornerstone found themselves in an early hole in set one, trailing 14-11 on an Abigail Martin kill.
- CU responded to tie set one at 15 on a trio of kills from Olivia Keelean, Kylie Barron, and Rylie Walters.
- A 5-1 Racer run put them on top 22-19 and forced a second CU timeout.
- After the timeout, Aubrey Lenz sealed the victory with three consecutive service aces to complete a thrilling comeback and take set one 25-23.
- Cornerstone got off to a better start in set two, going on top 4-1 with a Kaylee Dykema kill.
- A big block from Rylie Walters and Kaylee Dykema helped increase the CU advantage to 13-9.
- UNOH would keep it within one for much of the set. CU however was clutch yet again in the home stretch of the set, winning the last four points on a pair of kills from Kaylee Dykema and a block from Dykema to take the set 25-20.
- In set three, Cornerstone rode momentum to an early 10-4 lead that was capped off by a Kathryn Detweiler kill.
- Olivia Keelean recorded a kill later in the set that helped CU increase the advantage to eight at 15-7.
- The Racers used a strong serve from Savanna Reed to stay in the set and the match with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 15-12.
- Later a 3-0 run by the Racers gave them a 23-20 advantage that eventually led to a set three victory on a kill from Elli Roetgerman.
- Cornerstone had enough going into set four, scoring four straight points with a pair of Rylie Walters service aces to lead 14-8.
- The Golden Eagles carried the lead throughout with their most dominant set victory of 25-16 to take the match 3-1. CU hit a dominant .400 in set four with 12 kills and just two errors.
