Men’s Volleyball opens 2022 with a pair of W’s in the MMVI

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – The Golden Eagles have doubled up their program win total in just one day, as the second-year program got off to a hot start in 2022 with a five set victory over Olivet Nazarene and a four set victory against Cumberland. Cornerstone finally got to see the new faces in game action as David Galanes and Brunno Peres each proved to be offensive powerhouses combined for 45 of the teams 97 kills on the day. CU is 2-0 on the year and they will conclude the MMVI tomorrow back inside Mol Arena vs. Adrian at 1 p.m. and Judson at 5 p.m. 
 
Game One – Cornerstone – 3 Olivet Nazarene – 2 (25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-13)
  • The Golden Eagles first point of the 2022 season came on a Brunno Peres kill from Patrick Voloch.
  • A pair of 3-0 runs helped Cornerstone garnish an early lead with kills from Brunno Peres, Jacob Brinks, and David Galanes to go on top 10-7.
  • Back-to-back ONU service aces helped the Tigers regain the 13-12 edge. 
  • Cornerstone immediately responded with a 7-0 run to go on top 17-13. 
  • CU never relinquished the lead as they won set one 25-21 on a Jacob Brinks kill. 
  • Olivet responded well to start set two, using a Max Slaughter service ace to go on top 4-1. 
  • Titus Thompson continued the Tigers early run with a kill that made it 9-4. 
  • A big block from Joshua Beaumont and Brunno Peres as well as a kill from Peres helped CU cut the deficit back to just one, 12-11. 
  • Cornerstone would never take the lead in set two though as ONU used a 5-0 run to pull away and take the set 25-20. 
  • David Galanes was a standout at the service line early in set three, recording two aces to give Cornerstone a 5-1 edge. 
  • David Galanes, Jacob Brinks, and Brunno Peres all recorded huge kills in the middle of set three that increased the Golden Eagle lead to seven. 
  • Olivet Nazarene responded to cut the CU lead all the way back to one, but CU did not give in as Brunno Peres recorded a service ace to win set three 25-23. 
  • Neither team could garnish an advantage in set four, as the score sat 12-11 and saw nine ties through the first 23 points.
  • Two 3-0 runs allowed ONU to pull away in set four as Collier Kahaku Marquez recorded the kill that secured set four for the Tigers 25-18.
  • Olivet Nazarene took an early 4-2 lead in set five, but a rotation error changed the momentum completely in the Golden Eagles favor. 
  • ONU recorded three errors as CU earned a 4-0 run to go on top 6-4. 
  • Olivet Nazarene responded with a 4-0 run and a Cade Meza service error tied set five at 10-10. 
  • After Olivet Nazarene led 13-12, Cornerstone scored the final three points of the match, to win set five 15-13 with a match point service ace from Patrick Voloch. The Golden Eagles won their first match of the season in a five-set thriller over the brand-new Olivet Nazarene program. 
 
Game Two – Cornerstone – 3 Cumberland – 1 (25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20)
  • After trading points early, Cornerstone made the first big run with three straight points that was capped off by a block from Max Hernandez and Joshua Beaumont that made it 12-8. 
  • Cumberland then kicked themselves in the foot with three straight errors to give CU an 18-13 advantage. 
  • Cumberland came back to cut it within two but Cade Meza ended the set with a kill to give Cornerstone a 25-22 set one victory. 
  • To start set two, both teams traded runs, as Cumberland scored five straight to go up 6-3 and it was followed by four straight from the Golden Eagles. 
  • David Galanes recorded a huge kill later in the set to make it 15-11 Cornerstone. 
  • Again, Cumberland cut it back to within two, but the Phoenix recorded two service errors that gave Cornerstone set two, 25-22.
  • The block was prominent early in set four as David Galanes and Joshua Beaumont combined for two of them to tie things at 11.
  • David Galanes later recorded a kill that gave CU a 20-17 edge, but Cumberland scored eight of the last 10 points, including six straight, to take set three 25-22. 
  • An early Alex Hekman service ace helped Cornerstone rebound and get on top 7-4. 
  • The lead grew to as large as six after two Cumberland errors. 
  • Max Hernandez tallied two big kills that gave Cornerstone their largest lead of seven at 22-15. 
  • Cumberland started to rally back but it was too little too late as Brunno Peres put the match point ball away to give CU the 25-20 set four victory. 
 
By the Numbers 
8 – The middle Joshua Beaumont led the team with eight total blocks on the day. 
27 – David Galanes had a team high 27 kills with 14 vs. Olivet Nazarene and 13 against Cumberland.
49 – Patrick Voloch led the team with 49 assists. 
.200 – Cornerstone hit a consistent .200 in each match to open the 2022 campaign. 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone will play two more tomorrow vs. Adrian and Judson at 1 p.m. & 5 p.m. to conclude the MMVI Tournament.
