MISHAWAKA, Ind. – The young Golden Eagles after eight days off suffered a pair of setbacks being swept by both Grace and Cumberland in day one of the Liz Hossler Labor Day Classic hosted by Bethel University. CU will have a chance of redemption tomorrow against a pair of NAIA top 25 teams as they will take on (24) IU-Kokomo at 11 a.m. and the host (25) Bethel at 3 p.m.

Game One: Cornerstone – 0 Grace – 3 (18-25, 24-26, 23-25)

  • Grace scored the next six points out of the timeout to garnish their largest lead of 21-15.
  • Rylie Walters recorded a kill to stop the run and spur Cornerstone back on a 3-0 run to get them back in the set at 21-18.
  • After Cornerstone took their second timeout, Grace went on a 4-0 run to win set one 25-18. Rylie Walters recorded five of the Golden Eagles 10 kills in set one, but CU recorded six attack errors and six reception errors in set one.
  • Early in set two, Cornerstone scored four straight points on three Grace errors and a big block from Olivia Keelean to lead 5-3.
  • The Lancers responded with an 14-5 run to take over set two with a 17-9 edge.
  • Cornerstone answered with a 9-0 run to regain the lead 18-17. The run saw a big service ace from Rylie Walters and block from Kaley Vaughn and Kathryn Detweiler
  • After Grace regained the lead, Olivia Keelean dominated the serve when Cornerstone was facing three set points, recording a pair of aces to tie things at 24.
  • Grace recorded two kills to put CU away 26-24 in set two and take a 2-0 lead on the match.
  • In set three, Cornerstone was forced into an early timeout after falling behind 12-6. The serve continued to be a factor for both sides as Gina Novotny recorded back-to-back aces for the Lancers.
  • Kills from Olivia Keelean, Jada Thomas, and Rylie Walters helped CU chip away and cut the deficit to as low as three at 18-15 and force Grace into a timeout.
  • Three straight Grace attacking errors brought it to as low as one, and later Rylie Walters tallied another kill that tied the set at 22.
  • Alisha Leffring recorded the match clinching kill for Grace to win set three 25-23 and sweep the Golden Eagles.
