GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Fireworks tonight at Mol Arena as CU hosted Aquinas. The crowd was electric after each point, making this the loudest game in Mol this season. The Saints jumped out to a 2-1 lead, but the Golden Eagles stormed back to win the final two games, taking the fifth set 15-13. Late in the fifth there was a wild sequence with the refs handing out yellow and red cards to give CU a 14-11 lead following a call by the refs. The win gives CU a season sweep of AQ, moving Cornerstone to 15-12, 9-3 in the WHAC.
Game Recap: Cornerstone 3 – 2 Aquinas | (19-25, 25-15, 21-25, 25-21, 15-13)
- Aquinas and CU traded off three-point runs early in the first set, with the Saints taking a 9-6 lead after their second 3-0 run.
- With AQ up 14-11, they went on a 5-0 run led by Jackie Rozell who had three kills during that stretch.
- Down 20-12, the Golden Eagles went on a 5-0 run of their own, capped by three AQ attacking errors to cut the lead to 20-17.
- From there, Aquinas took control, finishing off the set 25-19 behind a Jenna Berens service ace.
- The Golden Eagles got off to a hot start going on a five-point run, led by two Olivia Keelean kills.
- Aquinas clawed their way back into the set, cutting the deficit to 6-4 before a 3-0 CU run stifled their momentum.
- Later in the second set, Cornerstone went on a second 5-0 run, led by two Kaylee Dykema kills to take a 19-9 CU lead.
- The rest of the set was back-and-forth with CU being in full control. Rylie Walters ended the set with a kill to take the set 25-15.
- Cornerstone started off hot again, taking an early 3-0 lead behind a Rylie Walters service ace and Kaylee Dykema kill.
- That's when Aquinas started going on runs, taking a 6-4 lead after a five-point run.
- The next Saints run came with AQ up 6-5, extending their lead to 10-5.
- CU went on a 4-0 run of their own to cut the AQ lead to 14-12.
- After trading off small runs, Aquinas went on a 4-0 run to take a commanding 23-17 lead.
- After a 3-0 run by the Golden Eagles, the Saints finished off the third set with an Abbi Perkins kill.
- The fourth set was tightly contested with both teams trading points. CU made the first big move by taking five of six points to take a 14-9 lead.
- The rest of the set was back and forth between the two teams. This allowed Cornerstone to take the fourth set 25-21 after a Kylie Barron kill.
- The fifth set was one for the books as Cornerstone took an early 5-1 lead after a 5-0 run behind two Olivia Keelean kills.
- After a few back-and-forth points, AQ went on a three-point run to even up the fifth set at 8-8.
- A few points later with the set tied 11-11, things got interesting.
- Kaylee Dykema recorded a kill to give CU a 12-11 lead.
- In the next point, an AQ attack went long, but their coaches and players believed their was a touch on the ball. The referees agreed their was not, which put CU up 13-11.
- The coaches continued to argue the call, which led to a red card being given to Aquinas. This gave another point to the Golden Eagles to extend their lead to 14-11.
- Aquinas scored the next two points, to threaten the Golden Eagles, but Olivia Keelean ended the match with a kill to take the fifth set 15-13.
