LIVONIA, Mich. – The Golden Eagles suffered a tough 3-1 WHAC Quarterfinal loss on Wednesday night at Madonna ending the team's season. The block was working well for CU tonight, recording 16 team blocks behind a career high mark for
Brooke Nicholson, but it was not enough to overcome the Crusaders. Cornerstone ends the year with a 15-17 overall record and 12-8 conference record under first year head coach
Megan Lenhart while Madonna will advance to the WHAC Tournament Semifinals against Lourdes on Friday at Lawrence Tech.
Game Recap – MU – 3 CU – 1 (25-20, 24-26, 15-25, 19-25)
- The home Crusaders got off to a hot start scoring the first five points. Cornerstone tied the set at six behind a pair of kills from Jackie Stanko. Madonna responded with another 5-0 run to force CU into a timeout at 11-6.
- Out of the timeout, Cornerstone was able to cut it back to just a one-point deficit at 13-12 on a kill from Alexis Angus.
- Madonna later went on a 4-1 run to take a 17-13 lead and force CU into their second timeout. MU continued the momentum the remainder of the set, winning 25-20. Jackie Stanko and Olivia Keelean each had five kills in set one for CU.
- The block of the Golden Eagles was significant early in set two, as CU pulled away at 12-7 behind a 4-0 run that saw blocks from Bailey Cummings and Brooke Nicholson.
- Cornerstone increased their lead to as large as seven at 15-8 on a service ace from Bailey Cummings.
- After Madonna began to cut into the deficit, Olivia Keelean recorded a huge kill to put the lead back at seven and force the Crusaders into their second timeout.
- Madonna cut the set two deficit to 19-17 and forced CU into their first timeout.
- Brooke Nicholson got back to being dominant on the block to help CU hold on to win set two 26-24 and tie the match at one set each.
- The Crusaders got out to a 9-3 set three lead to force Cornerstone into an early timeout.
- Cornerstone fell behind 19-6 and despite a late run, it was too much to overcome falling 25-15 in set three.
- CU responded well in set four, scoring the first five points behind a pair of kills from Bailey Cummings and Brooke Nicholson to force Madonna into an early timeout.
- Madonna was able to take their first lead of set four at 14-13 on a kill by Jodie Kelly.
- A bad set by Madonna gave CU the lead back at 16-15, but it would not last as the Crusaders went on a 4-0 run to take a 19-16 lead and force CU into a timeout.
- Madonna held on to take set four 25-19 and win the match 3-1 to end the Golden Eagles season.
