Upset of No. 11 Eastern Oregon highlights opening day sweep

FULLERTON, Calif. – The No. 16 ranked volleyball team opened its 2017 campaign in style on Wednesday night as they posted a 3-1 upset of No. 11 Eastern Oregon and finished the day off with a sweep of No. RV Northwest (Wa.). The Golden Eagles will resume play today at the HIU/Vanguard Summer Slam with a pair of matches at 7 p.m. EST against No. 9 Corban (Ore.) and 11 p.m. EST against The Masters (Calif.).
 
Match 1 – Cornerstone 3, Eastern Oregon 1 (25-17, 25-16, 25-27, 25-18)
 
The first match of three against Top-15 foes during the California trip saw the Golden Eagles use timely runs in sets one, two and four to post the 3-1 win over No. 11 Eastern Oregon. The Golden Eagles were led by Ellie Van Laar and Heather Carlson who each finished with 15 kills while freshman Bailey Cummings had 13 terminations in her debut.
 
Hope Leppink had a match-high 47 assists while Mackenzie Vallad led the defensive effort with 16 digs. Carlson and Leppink each finished with double-digit digs for their first double-doubles of the season.
 
 
Match 2 – Cornerstone 3, Northwest 0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-23)
 
The nightcap was a late one for the Golden Eagles as the match did not start until after midnight eastern time. In a very close three sets, CU was able to hold off late rallies by the Northwest Eagles to post a sweep and finish 2-0 on the day.
 
Reigning WHAC and AVCA Region Player of the Year Kendra Zwart dominated with 17 kills while hitting at a .481 clip. Van Laar and Carlson chipped in with nine kills each while Leppink handed out 37 assists in the 3-set win.
 
 
Notes…
  • The trip to California is the first for CU since 2013
  • CU had never faced either Eastern Oregon or Northwest before Wednesday evening

Cornerstone will remain at the HIU/Vanguard Summer Slam as they will take on No. 9 Corban (Ore.) at 7 p.m. EST and finish the tourney with The Masters (Calif.) at 11 p.m. EST on Thursday night.
