Men’s Basketball edges past Rochester Christian in crucial tournament victory

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Men's Basketball finds crucial win over Rochester Christian set them up for another home game this time for the WHAC semifinal. The Golden Eagles saw their seniors come up big when it mattered most as Connor Dykema had himself a day with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Blake Stewart also tallied 19 points and Mason Brooks collected 17 of his own. The Golden Eagles also saw Jack Joldersma get it done on both ends of the floor with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Cornerstone will now be set to host UNOH on Saturday, March 1 for the WHAC tournament semifinals. 
 
Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 95 Rochester Christian – 82
 
First Half
  • The Golden Eagles opened the game with a strong bucket in the paint from Jack Joldersma to get the quarterfinal underway. 
  • Connor Dykema came to play as he went full bully ball underneath the basket to add four quick points for Cornerstone as they led 6-4.
  • Jack Joldersma continued his hot start as well with another bucket for the Golden Eagles to keep the momentum early. 
  • Cornerstone secured the first deep ball of the game from a wide-open Toby Woolcock to extend the lead to 11-6 at the 15-minute mark. 
  • The Golden Eagles went to the bench quickly in the game as Mason Brooks sank a deep three pointer on his first touch of the ball with Cornerstone's offense rolling. 
  • The next two buckets for the Golden Eagles came off sweet spin moves in the paint from Connor Dykema and Toby Woolcock as Cornerstone led 20-8. 
  • Luke Rowlinson found his stroke quickly with back-to-back three pointers for the Golden Eagles to take a dominant advantage at 26-11 with 11 minutes left to play in the first half. 
  • The next Cornerstone strike came in transition as Kayden Bird sunk a long jumper to take a 28-11 lead with 10 minutes left in the half. 
  • Rochester Christian had no answer for Mason Brooks who put another long ball in that tripled the Warriors points at 33-11. 
  • The Cornerstone run continued with a fast-paced Eli Steffen bucket and the foul to extend the home teams lead to 36-11 with seven minutes on the clock.
  • Levi Schultz and Mason Brooks added two more buckets for the Golden Eagles as they were on cruise control in the first half. 
  • The Warriors finally found some buckets fall but Andy Mora took the sting out of their attack with another dagger three ball for Cornerstone to lead 43-15.
  • Jack Joldersma continued his bully ball down low for the Golden Eagles as he tallied his 10th first half point with two minutes left to play. 
  • The Golden Eagles found yet another highlight worthy play in the first half with a Toby Woolcock lob pass to Blake Stewart who finished the bucket and the foul as Cornerstone led 55-28 with only one minute left in the first half. 
  • Connor Dykema, Jack Joldersma, and Mason Brooks all finished the first half with 11 points as Cornerstone held a dominant 57-33 lead at the break. 
Second Half
  • Rochester Christian came out of the halftime break on a 7-0 run as they looked to find any ounce of momentum to take into the remainder of the game. 
  • Blake Stewart put the team on his shoulders with back-to-back buckets to get Cornerstone back in control with a 61-40 lead. 
  • The Warriors went on another large run this time for nine straight points to bring the game to 61-49 as they inched closer towards the Golden Eagles. 
  • Connor Dykema and Blake Stewart added two much needed buckets for the Golden Eagles to lighten the nervous mood inside Mol Arena.
  • The Golden Eagles led 67-53 as both teams went back and forth with Mason Brooks adding a bucket in that stretch. 
  • It was hot headed on the Cornerstone sideline as head coach Kim Elders was assessed a technical foul which Rochester Christian turned into points. 
  • Mason Brooks provided a perfect pass for Jack Joldersma that gave Cornerstone a 69-54 lead with 11 minutes left to play in the game. 
  • The Warriors continued to battle back as they made the game 69-61 with Cornerstone holding onto a slim eight-point advantage with nine minutes left to play. 
  • Connor Dykema had the whole gym on their feet after a dagger three pointer from the top of the key extended the Golden Eagles lead back to double digits. 
  • Blake Stewart went up high and got the dunk to go over the big man with Cornerstone in control at 75-65. 
  • The Golden Eagles added another Connor Dykema layup and followed it up with a Mason Brooks three-point basket to lead 80-66 with four minutes left in the game. 
  • Just when the Warriors thought they were close the Golden Eagles continued to find buckets this time through Blake Stewart and Luke Rowlinson as they led 84-68.
  • With one minute left to play in the WHAC quarterfinal the Golden Eagles lead narrowed to 85-72 yet they remained in complete control. 
  • Clutch free throw shooting and game management closed out a strong 95-82 victory over the Warriors as Cornerstone advances to the WHAC Semifinal. 
By the Numbers 
28 – Cornerstone had 28 bench points in the game compared to the Warriors three. 
46 – The Golden Eagles dominated inside the paint with 46 points as Rochester Christian only tallied 16. 
10 – Cornerstone saw all 10 players who entered the game score in the contest. 
 
What's Next? 
The Golden Eagles next test comes at home once again as they play UNOH on Saturday, March 1 for a chance to play in the WHAC Championship game.
