Women’s Basketball makes it seven wins in a row with crucial win over Aquinas

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Basketball put another win together this time over the hometown rival Saints. The ladies won 55-40 holding Aquinas to their lowest tally of points this season. Jaxi Long led the way with 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Golden Eagles. Jaylee Long, Mackenzie Goodwin, and Julie Ashbaugh all scored nine points to secure the massive team win. The victory now means that the ladies will host at least one round of the WHAC Tournament inside Mol Arena. The Golden Eagles next battle comes on the road against #RV Indiana Tech to close out their regular season on Saturday, February 22 at 1:00 p.m. 
 
Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 55 Aquinas – 40
  • First Quarter
    • Mackenzie Goodwin struck first for the Golden Eagles with a free throw to take an early 1-0 lead. 
    • Olivia Kubik drilled a three pointer on the next possession all the way from the logo to get Mol Arena bouncing.
    • Aquinas answered right away with a 6-0 run to take an 8-4 lead at the halfway point of the first quarter. 
    • Mackenzie Goodwin finished a strong drive to the rim, yet Cornerstone still trailed by two points. 
    • Aquinas continued to play well as they led 14-7 with two minutes left in the first quarter.
    • Jaxi Long closed out the quarter with a smooth jumper as the Saints held a 14-9 lead.  
  • Second Quarter
    • Julie Ashbaugh came to life to start the second quarter with back-to-back mid-range shots for the Golden Eagles. 
    • Jaylee Long knocked down a big time three ball to get Cornerstone within two points of the Saints. 
    • Julie Ashbaugh sliced her way into the lane and finished a bucket and the foul to give Cornerstone their first lead of the second quarter at 19-18. 
    • Aquinas went on a 4-0 run to make the game 22-19 with four minutes left on the clock. 
    • Jaylee Long answered right away with another deep three pointer for Cornerstone that tied the game 22-22. 
    • Jaxi Long and Mackenzie Goodwin found impactful drives down the stretch to give the Golden Eagles a 26-23 lead with one minute left to play in the half. 
    • The Saints earned a technical found at the end of the half which Olivia Kubik turned into two more points for Cornerstone as they led 28-23 at the halftime buzzer. 
  • Third Quarter
    • Aquinas opened the scoring in the third quarter, but Mackenzie Goodwin answered right away for the Golden Eagles with the score at 30-25. 
    • The Saints continued to stay in the contest as they tied the game back up at 30-30 with five minutes left to play in the third. 
    • Jaxi Long began to find her stroke as she sank a three pointer for Cornerstone to regain the lead. 
    • Mackenzie Goodwin and Emma Costen turned defense into offense with massive fast break buckets to take a 37-30 lead with two minutes on the clock. 
    • Jaxi Long came up big once again in the third with another three pointer for the Golden Eagles to take their largest lead of the game at 40-31. 
    • Jaxi Long closed out the quarter with a pair of free throws as the Golden Eagles were moving with serious momentum. 
  • Fourth Quarter
    • It was a slow start to the fourth quarter, but Aquinas finally scored after three minutes to bring the game to 42-33. 
    • The Saints continued to score quickly as they narrowed the gap to 42-36 with six minutes left to play. 
    • Jaxi Long came up clutch again with back-to-back buckets when Cornerstone needed it most to extend their lead to double digits. 
    • Julie Ashbaugh continued her strong performance with a silky-smooth scoop and score for Cornerstone as they led 48-36. 
    • Jaylee Long knocked down her third three pointer of the game to give Cornerstone a huge 51-36 lead headed into the final minutes of the game. 
    • Jaxi Long and Olivia Kubik closed out the victory with two more buckets for the Golden Eagles as they ran away with a 55-40 victory to clinch a home court for their first tournament appearance.

1 – Cornerstone clinched at least one home game with tonight's victory over the Saints.
