ADRIAN, Mich. – A full-strength Siena Heights took revenge against Cornerstone, downing CU 79-47 at the SHU Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening. Cornerstone could not find their offense in the second and third quarter, combining for 13 points in the 20-minute stretch, with 11 of those scored by
Stephanie Ainsworth. The Golden Eagles drop to 13-12, 12-6 WHAC on the year as they will take on the current five seed Concordia in Ann Arbor on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a huge matchup.
Game Flow:
First Quarter:
- Cornerstone got off to a great start at Siena Heights, with center Stephanie Ainsworth getting going offensively and scoring four of the first six CU points to put them on top 6-2.
- Mackenzie Stien later hit a layup to put CU on top 8-5 before a scoring drought for both sides would ensue. Neither team would score for nearly two minutes as the Golden Eagles stayed on top 8-5.
- SHU would respond with an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 13-10\1. Kayla Hinton scored four of the eight in the run for the Saints.
- Olivia Kubik snapped the run with her second three ball to put CU right back on top, 14-13 with 2:41 to play in the quarter.
- Again, Siena Heights found a small run scoring five straight points. Maddison Fulks would join the three-point parade though with her first three to put CU within one, 18-17 at the end of the first.
Second Quarter:
- The Saints defense shined through to begin the second quarter. CU would not score for the first two minutes until Stephanie Ainsworth hit a layup to make the Golden Eagle deficit three, 22-19.
- Cornerstone continued to struggle offensively in the second quarter with Ainsworth's bucket being the only points in the first seven and a half minutes of the period.
- CU would be outscored 17-4 in the quarter with Stephanie Ainsworth scoring the only Golden Eagle points in the period.
- The Golden Eagles trailed 35-21 at halftime.
Third Quarter:
- Stephanie Ainsworth continued to be the primary source of offense for the Golden Eagles, starting the third period with an and-one bucket to get CU back within 11.
- The Stephanie Ainsworth show continued throughout the third quarter. She scored 11 consecutive Golden Eagle points to get CU within 10, 38-28.
- Kennedy Helderop finally ended the run of no Golden Eagle scoring other than Ainsworth with a. pair of made free throws with 22 seconds to go in the third quarter.
- The SHU lead would balloon to as high as 24 though as they took a 52-30 advantage into the final 10 minutes with CU being outscored 17-9 in the third quarter.
Fourth Quarter:
- Jaxi Long hit her first bucket of the game at the beginning of the fourth quarter with an and-one that put CU within 21 at 55-34.
- Cornerstone continued to score in the fourth as a Kaycee Sluiter jumper gave them 10 in the period just three and a half minutes in, which served as more points than the team scored in all of the second or third periods. CU could not get it going on the defensive end though as they still trailed by 24 with 6:27 to go.
- Siena Heights continued to pour it on as they held a 77-44 advantage with 2:29 to play.
- Cornerstone would fall 79-47 on the road for a season split with Siena Heights.
By the numbers:
