Men’s Basketball dominates in home opener vs. Kuyper

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles were in command from start to finish, seeing 13 players score, shooting over 50%, hitting 10 threes, and scoring over 100 points in a 106-64 home opening victory vs. Kuyper. Luke Rowlinson led the way with 25 points, as every Golden Eagle saw the floor on the afternoon. CU is now 2-1 on the year as they will play at IU-South Bend next week on Saturday, November 11. 
 
Game Flow: Cornerstone – 106 Kuyper - 64
First Half:
  • Luke Rowlinson helped CU get off to a dominant start with a pair of threes, as Cornerstone started the game on a 15-2 run. 
  • The three was falling early for everyone as Eli Steffen was dishing to all his teammates. Jack Joldersma hit his first three of the game at the 15:29 mark left in the first half to make it 21-7. 
  • Two more deep balls from Luke Rowlinson made it 27-8 just seven minutes into the contest. 
  • The defense shined too as Cornerstone held Kuyper to 17 points for a stretch of six minutes as their lead ballooned to 32, 49-17. 
  • Cornerstone got cold from the field to end the half, as they held a 50-24 edge at halftime. 
Second Half:
  • Cory Ainsworth got rolling in the post to start the second half. He scored two early layups to bring the CU advantage back to 29. 
  • Kuyper started to hit a few threes in the middle of the second half to cut the deficit to as low as 21 with 13:44 to play. 
  • Cornerstone then would go on a 20-2 run that saw a three from Mason Brooks and five total Golden Eagles score to bring the lead to its largest so far of the day at 79-41.
  • In the final seven minutes, Cornerstone emptied the bench. CU saw success all over the floor, as Tre Seydel, Bryce Nyboer, and Aiden Gortmaker led a unit that increased the team advantage to a whopping 45 points with 4:06 to play. 
  • Luke VanderWerff scored the final CU bucket as they would take their home opener 106-64. 
 
By the numbers:
35 – Cornerstone saw 35 bench points led by eight each from Mason Brooks and Trenton Boike
35.3% - CU held Kuyper to 35.3% from the field. 
8-9 – Cory Ainsworth finished the game with 21 points, only missing one shot as he was 8-9 from the field.

Cornerstone is back in action a week from today at IU-South Bend for a 3 p.m. tip.
