Nieuwkoop and Thompson pace Cross Country at Great Lakes Challenge

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On a wet and rainy day at Riverside Park, the men's and women's cross country teams sledged through the mud to finish 8th on the women's side and 14th on the men's side in the NAIA Great Lake Challenge. In a meet featuring over 20 ranked schools total, the Golden Eagles were led by Haley Nieuwkoop's 3rd place finish for the women and Jamin Thompson's 43rd place finish for the men. CU will race again back at Riverside in two weeks in the WHAC Championships.

Jamin Thompson continued his dominance at the top of the Golden Eagle men's lineup, and despite a late fall with less than a mile to go, the junior placed 43rd overall with a time of 25:35.70. He was the second finisher from the WHAC, placing one second behind Aquinas' Andrew Ireland.
 
Andy Adams was 30 seconds behind Thompson at 26:04 and finished 73rd overall.
 
NAIA No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan put four runners in the top 10 and all five in the top 20 as they cruised to the team title, 65 points better than second place Cumberlands. Aquinas was the top team from the WHAC, with CU finishing second.

#17 Women's Results
The 17th ranked Golden Eagles ran a 5k race and once again saw Haley Nieuwkoop lead the way with a third place overall finish individually and a time of 18:20.
 
Jacie Remtema did not run so the Golden Eagles saw the next wave of finishers come in a batch as Kori Bauman placed 54th at 19:46 and she was followed closely by Kiarra La,bert in 58th, Jessica Jarski in 72nd and Elise Conkel in 76th
 
Cornerstone as a team finished 8th of 22 teams in the Maroon Division of the collegiate 5k with a total team time of 1:38:10.
 
Saint Francis (Ill.) finished as the champion by outdistancing second place Goshen by 36 points. CU was the top team from the WHAC in 8th as UM-Dearborn finished 11th, one spot ahead of Indiana Tech and two spots ahead of Aquinas.

Cornerstone is back at Riverside Park for the annual WHAC Championships in two weeks.
