GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles could not withstand the deep ball shooting of Lawrence Tech, falling 78-74 at home on Wednesday evening. The Blue Devils went 11-30 from three and were able to win their third ever game against Cornerstone to drop CU to 12-6, 6-4 WHAC on the year. Cornerstone looks to rebound with a home game with UNOH this Saturday at 3 p.m.
Game Flow
- Cornerstone was held to one shot late in the clock each of the first few possessions, as the defense dominated for both sides through the first two minutes.
- Cory Ainsworth scored the first bucket of the game with an and-one bucket that he was unable to hit the free throw on, giving CU a 2-0 lead.
- Lawrence Tech did not find their first point until nearly four minutes into the game with a three from Alejandro Gonzalez.
- The three pointers then began to fall for the Golden Eagles as Carter Nyp hit two and Mason Brooks hit one to give Cornerstone the 15-7 advantage.
- The Blue Devils responded with six straight to cut their deficit to two, 15-13. Isaiah Cumberland converted an and-one in the run to make it a two-point game with 12:32 to go in the half.
- With 9:29 to go in the first half, Andrew Rinn hit a three for LTU that tied the game at 20.
- The defenses would again start to take control for the next five minutes of play. Lawrence Tech would take their first lead of the game after a steal and free throw from Shamar Matthews at the 5:02 mark remaining in the period.
- Blake Lund hit a fade away jumper to end the half, giving Lawrence Tech a 34-31 lead at the break.
- The two teams attempted 36 threes in the first half on 64 total field goal attempts with each team hitting five from behind the arc.
- Lawrence Tech came out swinging in the second half hitting three three balls in the first five minutes to increase their edge to 47-40.
- After a three from freshman Lewis Jones cut the deficit to four, LTU went on a 6-0 run to go up 10, 53-43.
- With 10:53 to play, Cory Ainsworth hit an and-one that cut the Blue Devil lead back to just six at 55-49.
- Lawrence Tech would again make it a 10-point lead at 66-56 with 7:02 to play.
- In scramble mode, the veteran Golden Eagles found an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to get within two. Eli Steffen and Cory Ainsworth each had four points in the run to make the deficit 69-67.
- Andrew Rinn took over in the final minutes however, hitting a dagger three with 1:46 to play to put Lawrence Tech on top 76-71.
- In the final 10 seconds, Cornerstone would again get the deficit down to just two but were unable to find a bucket to tie or take the lead. CU was forced to foul multiple times to put Lawrence Tech in the bonus, and they would convert to earn the 78-74 upset victory over CU.

Carter Nyp added another double-double to his tally with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
63/33 – Cornerstone attempted 63 total shots with 33 of those being from behind the arc.
39.7 – For just the second time this season, Cornerstone was held under 40% from the field.

Cornerstone stays home as they will host Northwestern Ohio on Saturday at 3 p.m.
