GRAND RAPIDS, Mich – Cornerstone Wrestling had a busy weekend battling in the Blithe Memorial Duals against multiple great wrestling programs. Day one was a successful day that saw Cornerstone beat both Wheaton and Siena Heights in their pool play and going down to the wire with D1 opponent Liberty University. Day two was bracket play as Cornerstone got matched up against St. Ambrose to start it off and won easily moving on in the winner's bracket. They then had to face UW-Eau Claire in the semifinal round. The wrestlers struggled in the semifinals to eventually lose as they would face off against Liberty for the 3
rd Place Dual. Liberty and Cornerstone was close again throughout the dual before the heavyweights, as Liberty would top Cornerstone.
Trevor Marsman continued to show why he is one of the best in his weight class as he lost only one dual during the two-day event.
Thade Radosa wrestled well for the two-day event in a highly competitive weight class where he lost two matches for the tournament.
Daniel Countryman wrestled twice and won both matches.
Noah Anderson had a very successful weekend where he went undefeated in his four duals pinning two of his four opponents.
Joe Lashuay also continued his great wrestling losing just two duals and pinning three of his opponents.
Cornerstone will look to build of their successful wrestling as they won't wrestle again until the new year as they host University of Rio Grande on January 5.
Wrestling Highlights
Day One
Cornerstone def. Wheaton 27-15
The Golden Eagles got off to a great start at the Blithe Memorial Duals by beating Wheaton College 27-15.
Trevor Marsman continued to show why he is one of the best in his weight class by pinning his opponent Anthony Zamora in 46 seconds. Thomas Zielinksi wrestled well beating his opponent by decision 6-4.
Thade Radosa wrestled well enough to win but was not able to pull out the moves late, losing by decision 4-2. Luke Jaworksi and
Joe Lashuay have continued their good stretch of wrestling by beating both of their opponents by decision.
Noah Anderson impressed in his first dual of the day by winning over his opponent Garrett Boyd by fall 2:49 as well as
Jacob Nelson pinning his opponent to help Cornerstone win over Wheaton in their first dual.
Cornerstone def. Siena Heights 27-21
The Golden Eagles brought the momentum from the first dual into their matchup against Siena Heights as they beat them 27-21.
Trevor Marsman set the tone for the dual as he won over Zachary LaPlante by tech fall 17-0. After Siena won the next three duals going up 9-5 over Cornerstone,
Thade Radosa overpowered his opponent by pinning him 2:49 into the dual, giving the Golden Eagles the lead that they never gave back.
Noah Anderson won his dual by major decision 12-2 as
Joe Lashuay and
Jackson Turner both continued their strong wrestling play by pinning their opponents, helping Cornerstone to win their second dual matchup of the day.
Liberty def. Cornerstone 23-17
The Golden Eagles had a tough matchup on their hands as they squared off against Division 1 opponent Liberty University to finish off pool-play for day one. Just like his previous matchups,
Trevor Marsman was too much to handle as he kicked off the dual with another victory in dominant fashion winning by major decision 14-6.
Devan Johnson had his best dual of the day as it all came down to the final period where he made enough moves to cap off a great victory by decision 13-7 over his opponent.
Thade Radosa was dominant from the start of the match coming out aggressive and getting early takedowns that was too much for the Liberty wrestler to handle as he won by major decision 15-3.
Daniel Countryman got to wrestle in his first dual of the day and he made the most of it. The tightly contested dual went to overtime tied 1-1 where Daniel was able to get the key takedown to win the dual for the Golden Eagles.
Joe Lashuay continued his successful day of wrestling using key late match takedowns to win by decision 13-6 to give Cornerstone the 17-8 lead. Liberty was able to take control of the dual with their heavyweights as they pinned two of the next three duals to win it, 23-17.
Day Two Bracket Play
Quarterfinal – Cornerstone def. St. Ambrose 34-19
Cornerstone got off to a great start to bracket play by beating St. Ambrose 34-19 as they moved onto the next round to face off against University-Wisconsin Eau Claire.
Trevor Marsman was
Trevor Marsman to start the day for the Golden Eagles beating his opponent with ease, 16-0 tech fall.
Thomas Zielinski used the momentum from the first dual, as he would go on to beat his opponent by tech fall as well 22-4 giving Cornerstone the early advantage in the dual.
Noah Anderson and
Joe Lashuay continued their success into day two by both beating their opponents by fall in under two minutes. St. Ambrose had to forfeit the 141 and 197 weight classes as Cornerstone would end up winning the dual.
Semifinal – UW-Eau Claire def. Cornerstsone 38-3
Cornerstone matched up in the semifinal against a tough UW-Eau Claire team that would end up beating Cornerstone 38-3.
Trevor Marsman started out the dual in tightly contested dual that saw his opponent Carter Schulz pull out last second moves to just edge him out losing by decision 7-4.
Daniel Countryman got his second dual of the tournament and didn't disappoint again as he won the only dual for the Golden Eagles pulling out nice final period moves that just had him edge out his opponent by decision 9-7.
Joe Lashuay and
Jacob Nelson both wrestled well but were not able to come out of their dual with a victory.
3rd Place Dual – Liberty def. Cornerstone 35-10
Cornerstone finished day two just like day one going against Liberty University for third place.
Trevor Marsman got back on track winning by major decision 11-3 to start the dual on a high note. Thomas Zielinksi and
Devan Johnson both had close duals against their opponents but fell by decision 7-4 and 8-4.
Thade Radosa also got back on track ending his two-day tournament on a very good note, winning over his opponent by decision 8-3.
Noah Anderson also got the job done, winning by decision 8-5 before the Liberty heavyweights took over, eventually pulling ahead being the difference maker in the dual.
