GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – It was dominant victory for the Golden Eagles as they got back in the win column as they cruise past Siena Heights 89-45. It was a typical performance by the Cornerstone defense as they held Siena to under 30% from the field and 45 total points.
Cory Ainsworth and
Carter Nyp led the way for the Golden Eagles as Ainsworth had 20 points and nine rebounds as Nyp had 18 points and eight rebounds. Cornerstone will stay home as they face off against Lourdes for their rescheduled game on Thursday, December 15 at 7 p.m.
Game Highlights
- Cory Ainsworth got the scoring started for the Golden Eagles that eventually led to a quick 10-3 Cornerstone run in the first three minutes. Luke Rowlinson and Carter Nyp hit early threes for Cornerstone.
- Cornerstone used the next four minutes to go on another scoring run that saw their lead extend to 21-7 as there was no answer for the Golden Eagle offense. Luke Rowlinson and Eli Steffen get easy buckets around the rim.
- Cory Ainsworth scored 10-straight points for the Golden Eagles with nifty post moves that gave Cornerstone a 34-13 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half.
- Siena Heights responded with easy buckets down the stretch before halftime to try and cut the Cornerstone lead down as it was 44-23 heading into halftime.
- Siena came out strong in the second half, shutting down the Cornerstone offense for the first three minutes as they outscored the Golden Eagles 5-0 to make it 44-28.
- Cornerstone and Siena traded buckets back-and-forth as Siena cut the Cornerstone lead down to 18 before Zac Velthouse was able to hit a three to end the Cornerstone drought.
- It continued to be all Cornerstone as they used a 12-3 run to extend their lead 72-45 with five-minutes remaining in the game as Toby Woolcock and Mason Brooks scored for the Golden Eagles.
- Cornerstone closed out the game not allowing Siena Heights to score for the final 4:47 as Luke Vanderwerff went to work scoring 10-straight points to help give Cornerstone the 89-45 victory.
