GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Despite entering halftime down 42-35, Cornerstone did not back down against Siena Heights, taking this game to overtime en route to an 84-81 victory.
Cory Ainsworth led the Golden Eagles with 21 points before fouling out late in the second half.
Carter Nyp and
Jonny Strube finished the job in overtime, each scoring five points during the extra period. That win moves Cornerstone to 15-8 overall, 9-4 in the WHAC.
What you need to know?
- Siena Heights got off to a hot start, dropping three straight threes to begin the game. Jack Joldersma broke up their run with a dunk to cut the SHU lead to 9-2 with 17:56 to play in the first half.
- Down 21-11, CU hit three straight layups, capped by Christian Rodriguez, to cut the Saints lead to four with 11:12 left in the first stanza.
- Siena Height went on a small scoring run before Carter Nyp scored six straight points in the paint for the Golden Eagles to move the scoreboard to 26-23 in favor of SHU with 5:12 to go.
- CU later went on a 7-2 run to end the first half, capped by a Trent Summerfield three and Christian Rodriguez layup. Siena Heights took a 42-35 lead into the half.
- Cory Ainsworth got off to a hot start in the second half, hitting three straight layups to help cut the SHU lead to 44-41.
- Down 52-47, Drew Knickerbocker dropped back-to-back threes to help Cornerstone take their first lead of the game, 53-52, with 12:54 left to play in regulation.
- With 9:13 to play, CU started a 9-0 run that began with a Jack Joldersma layup and finished with a Trent Summerfield three to give the Golden Eagles a 62-60 lead with 6:49 left.
- Play went back-and-forth for the rest of regulation which eventually led to SHU having a one-point lead before Jack Joldersma skied for an and one layup before hitting the free throw to put CU up 72-70 with 12 seconds to play in the second half.
- Right after that, Siena Heights tied the game on a Kiewuan Graham layup to send the game to overtime tied at 72.
- OT favored the Golden Eagles as Carter Nyp and Jonny Strube each scored five points as CU was finally able to put away Siena Heights 84-81 for the OT win.
