Men's Basketball continues road trip at UM-Dearborn and Aquinas

1/11/2022 5:15:00 PM

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After Saturday's postponement at UNOH, the Golden Eagles are ready to return to the standard two match week with road contests at UM-Dearborn and Aquinas. CU will conclude the first half of the WHAC year at the Wolverines before beginning the second half at the Saints on Saturday. For more information on how to watch this weeks action, visit HERE.

Three Point Attack

Cornerstone is a team that loves to shoot the three ball and that proved true this past Wednesday in their last game, hitting a season high 16 threes on a season high 45 attempts. Unfortunately, the season high did not earn them a W as they fell 89-84 to Madonna. Senior Carter Nyp fell one short of his career high in the loss, with seven of the 16 made threes. Cornerstone has shot over 40 threes two times this season now, and three times in the last four years.

COVID-19 Reschedule

The Golden Eagles saw their first game rescheduled due to COVID-19 issues this season, as Northwestern Ohio was unable to play due to virus protocols. The two teams were originally scheduled to meet in Lima, Ohio on Saturday but will now look to play on an upcoming Monday or Thursday. Both coaches are in the process of finding a reschedule date, which will be announced at a later time on cugoldeneagles.com.

Fifth Year of 100+

The assist king Christian Rodriguez already broke the CU program assist record earlier this year and is the first player to crack 600+ career assists. However, Rodriguez is now just seven assists away from putting up 100+ assists in all five of his seasons as a Golden Eagle. Rodriguez most for a single season was 175 as a sophomore, which sits just outside the top five all-time. Rodriguez is at 93 for the year with eight in his last contest, giving him a season average of 5.1 assists per game.

Scouting UM-Dearborn

The Wolverines return to play after not seeing action in the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19, with a young and small roster of just 12 players. The team has struggled in their return, going 3-14, 1-8 WHAC as they sit in last place in the conference. The team is under new direction after their former coach moved to Graceland University out in Iowa that CU saw earlier this year. UM-Dearborn has just not had a strong offense on the year, averaging 64.8 PPG and shooting under 40% from the field. Guard Elwood Tomlinson has been the major standout for the Wolverines averaging a team high 17.9 PPG and 2.4 APG. Cornerstone and UM-Dearborn have played a lot of close games of late however, with four of the last six games decided by two points or less.

Scouting Aquinas

After getting off to a strong start on the year, Aquinas has dropped three straight contests as they sit at 10-8, 4-5 WHAC on the year. In the first meeting of the year, Cornerstone dominated the Saints at home in a 93-66 victory for their 10th straight, the longest active win streak vs. a WHAC team by Head Coach Kim Elders. AQ has seen eight players earn a start so far this year, as the big center out of Holland Christian Gabe Overway is leading the team with 16.9 PPG and 8.8 RPG this season.
