GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone was shocked by Concordia in the WHAC Tournament Quarterfinal, falling 77-69 on Thursday evening to end their season. CU struggled from behind the arc hitting just two threes in the game. The Golden Eagles end the season with a 12-6 record overall. The team will now begin preparations for the 2021-22 campaign as they enter the offseason.
What you need to know?
- The two teams traded buckets through the first five minutes of the game as the score was tied 8-8.
- Cornerstone then went on an 8-0 run, that saw a pair of Gabe Meriwether buckets and some scrappy offensive rebounding from Jonny Strube to go on top 16-8.
- Concordia responded with a 5-0 run and a Thomas Hronis three to cut the CU lead to three, 16-13.
- Kyle Hayes slammed home a dunk to give the Golden Eagles a little energy and make it 20-16.
- Concordia continued to chip away with the three ball and strong defense to take 27-26 lead into the half. Neither team scored a point in the final two minutes of the first half.
- After trading buckets again to start the second half, Riley Costen hit CU's first three of the game to give CU the 36-34 lead.
- Matt Lockhart hit a layup for CUAA to give them the lead back at 38-36 before calling a timeout.
- Kyle Hayes scored four straight after the timeout to give CU the lead back 40-38.
- Concordia once again responded with a 5-0 run to regain the edge 43-40.
- Kyle Hayes and Riley Costen then spurred the longest Golden Eagle run of the game to this point, outscoring Concordia 12-2 to go on top 52-45, forcing the Cardinals into a timeout with 8:39 to play.
- CU increased the advantage to a game high nine with a Drew Knickerbocker dunk, but CUAA again responded immediately hitting three consecutive long balls to tie things at 57.
- With just under two minutes to play, Cornerstone got a huge stop and Riley Costen earned a trip to the free throw line with a hard drive to the hoop. He made both to give CU the 67-65 edge.
- Concordia's Thomas Hronis hit the biggest three of the game with 1:09 to play, after a great CU defensive possession giving the Cardinals the lead back 68-67.
- A technical foul on Cornerstone then cost the Golden Eagles with 56 seconds to go giving CUAA a pair of free throws and the ball.
- CUAA hit their free throws down the stretch and completed the upset, 77-69.
