Men's Basketball overpowers Aquinas for 90-67 victory

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – The Golden Eagles took to the court on Saturday afternoon to host their rivals from Aquinas inside Mol Arena. Cornerstone established a double-digit lead late in the first half and never looked back as they coasted to a 90-67 victory. The Golden Eagles (11-4, 8-2 WHAC) will conclude the regular season with back-to-back games with Lawrence Tech on Monday and Rochester on Tuesday.

What you need to know? 
  • Carter Nyp buried a pair of three-pointers in the first three minutes of action to bring the score to 8-8.
  • A layup from Riley Costen with 10:44 to play in the first half capped off an 8-0 run for CU, giving them their first double digit lead of the game at 24-14.
  • Cory Ainsworth converted a three-point play with a layup and the ensuing free throw to give the Golden Eagles a 31-23 lead with 8:02 to play in the first half.
  • A layup from Kyle Hayes and a pair of three-pointers from Tyler Baker and Gabe Meriwether extended Cornerstone's lead to 42-27 with 4:43 to go in the first half. 
  • The Golden Eagles scored the final six points of the opening frame, capped off by a mid range jumper from Christian Rodriguez to give Cornerstone a 49-33 lead at the break, their largest lead of the half. 
  • Cornerstone shot an impressive 58.8% from the floor in the first half. 
  • The teams alternated buckets early in the second half
  • A layup from Christian Rodriguez with 14:17 to go boosted Cornerstone's lead to a game-high 21 points, 66-45
  • Aquinas went on a 12-4 run to cut Cornerstone's lead to 70-57 with 9:46 to go. 
  • The Saints hit a jumper with 5:55 to play, but were then held scoreless for the remainder of the game, as Cornerstone ended the game with a 10-0 run to win it 90-67. 



By the Numbers 
17 – Kyle Hayes recorded a season-high 17 points
21/9 – Cory Ainsworth led CU with 21 points and nine rebounds.
14 – Carter Nyp scored 14 points behind 4-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc.
54.3% – The Golden Eagles shot 58.8% in the first half and 54.3% over the whole game. 
22-11 – Cornerstone had twice as many assists as Aquinas.
9 – Nine straight wins for the Golden Eagles against Aquinas. 

What's Next? 
Cornerstone concludes the regular season with back-to-back games on Monday and Tuesday. The Golden Eagles will travel to Lawrence Tech on Monday before hosting Rochester for senior day inside Mol Arena on Tuesday night.
