LIMA, Ohio – Cornerstone erupted for 17 made threes on 35 attempts, setting a program record in a huge 76-55 road win at Northwestern Ohio on Saturday afternoon.
Layna Steele led the way with four made threes and 19 points, but it was falling for everyone as nine CU players hit one from behind the arc. Cornerstone is now 5-11, 2-6 WHAC as they will start the second half of the WHAC schedule on Monday at Madonna at 5:30 p.m.
Game Flow:
- The three-point prowess began just 1:30 into the game as Sterling DeGayner hit a three to go on top 5-2.
- UNOH responded with an 8-1 run to take a 10-6 lead.
- Brooke Modderman hit a layup for the final points of the low scoring first quarter as Cornerstone trailed 16-13.
- The offenses began to find their stride in the second quarter as CU hit four threes in the first five minutes and went on a 9-2 run to go on top 29-22.
- After UNOH cut it to as low as three, Cornerstone ended the half on a 9-0 run capped off by a Layna Steele three to take their largest lead of 12 into the half, 41-29.
- Cornerstone picked up right where they left off, scoring the first seven points of the second half as Brooke Modderman hit another three to go up 19.
- Ellen Kresge joined the three-point shooting action, hitting one with 5:28 left in the third quarter to go on top 54-34.
- Layna Steele hit a three to end the third quarter as Cornerstone led 62-40.
- Five more points by Layna Steele to start the fourth gave Cornerstone the 67-40 advantage.
- UNOH went on a run to cut it to 22 with 6:17 to play and force CU to use a timeout.
- After the timeout, Cornerstone hit three more threes. Kaycee Sluiter got in the action and hit the program record tying 16th three of the game. Katelyn Siebert then followed that with the record breaking three with 1:37 to play in the game.
- Cornerstone sealed the win 76-55, their largest margin of victory on the season.
