WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Despite a career-high 30 points from
Cory Ainsworth, Cornerstone couldn't take down #7 Grace College (Ind.), falling in 2OT 91-83. Cornerstone held the lead for a large chunk of the game, but Grace kept it close, eventually hitting two free throws late in the second half to tie the game up at 69 heading into the first OT. At the end of the first OT, the refs took a few minutes to review the tape and eventually awarded two free throws to
Christian Rodriguez, who hit both with 0:00 remaining to send the game to double overtime. Grace pulled away, finishing off the Golden Eagles by outscoring CU 12-4 in the second overtime. That loss drops Cornerstone's record to 11-6.
What you need to know:
- Cory Ainsworth got his high-scoring night started with an early layup to score the first points of the game.
- After a two minute scoring draught by both teams, Luke Rowlinson got the scoring started again with a jumper, giving CU an 11-3 lead with 13:27 to play in the first half.
- With 6:25 to play in the first half, Trent Summerfield splashed a three to put the Golden Eagles up eight, 28-20.
- Christian Rodriguez scored seven straight CU points, with his final free throw of that run putting Cornerstone up 40-33 with 2:10 to play in the half.
- CU took a five-point lead into halftime 44-39 after Christian Rodriguez hit a pair of free throws with just over 30 seconds to play.
- Cory Ainsworth got off to a quick start in the second half, hitting three layups in a row en route to a 50-42 lead with 16:14 to play.
- Grace went on a run of their own in the second half, storming back to eventually take a 55-53 lead with 11:30 to play following a Frankie Davidson layup.
- Drew Knickerbocker did his part, hitting a three with 4:24 to play in the second half to give CU a 65-62 lead.
- Then, with 3:00 to play, Christian Rodriguez hit a jumper to give CU a two-point lead, but Grace responded to tie it up 69-69 and send the game to OT after hitting a pair of free throws with 1:34 to go.
- In the first OT, Cory Ainsworth made a layup to get the scoring started for CU.
- With under a minute left in the first OT, Jack Joldersma tied the game up at 75 after converting a layup.
- With four seconds to play, Grace made layup to take a 79-77 lead. Christian Rodriguez then streaked down the court, getting fouled. The refs reviewed the call for a few minutes eventually awarding Rodriguez two free throws that hit with 0:00 on the clock to send the game to second OT.
- Christian Rodriguez and Cory Ainsworth both scored buckets early to giving, CU an 83-82 lead, but that was all the scoring for Cornerstone in the final OT period as Grace ran away with the lead, winning the contest 91-83.
By the Numbers:
2 – Two Golden Eagles had double-doubles, with Ainsworth dropping 30 points with 13 boards, while
Carter Nyp scored 10 points and added 12 rebounds.
