Men's Basketball Grounds the Pilots in 91-83 Win

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – The hot start to the season continued for the Golden Eagles as they knocked off Bethel (Ind.) 91-83 in Mol. Once again, Christian Rodriguez took control of the offense, dropping 27 points, while tallying 7 assists. He also led the team in rebounds, pulling down 8. Six CU players scored in double-digits tonight, with Luke Rowlinson and Jonny Strube scoring 13, while Trent Summerfield, Carter Nyp, and Drew Knickerbocker scored 12 apiece. This win moves the Golden Eagles to 3-0 for the first time since 2014. All three wins have come against Crossroads League foes.

  • Drew Knickerbocker started the game hot, scoring 8 of the first 12 Golden Eagle points.
  • Carter Nyp scored five straight just over five minutes into the contest, nailing a three and then throwing down a dunk.
  • At 10:03 to go in the first half, Trent Summerfield splashed a three, giving CU a 16-point lead, their largest of the game.
  • Christian Rodriguez finished the first half on a tear, scoring eight points in the final minute and a half to give Cornerstone a 51-37 lead heading into the break.
  • Drew Knickerbocker started the second half with a layup to get the CU scoring going.
  • Then, Bethel rattled home five straight points before Jonny Strube hit a jumper with 15:21 remaining in the second half to give the Golden Eagles a 57-44 lead.
  • After Bethel cut the lead to eight, Luke Rowlinson hit a three to keep the Pilots at bay.
  • With 8:19 to play, BU cut the CU lead to seven, the smallest margin since the first half. Australian Toby Woolcock stepped in to hit a layup, scoring the first points of his collegiate career to impede the Bethel comeback.
  • To finish off the game, Christian Rodriguez, Jonny Strube, and Trent Summerfield all hit some free throws to ice the game, helping lead CU another non-conference victory with a 91-83 win over Bethel.
