Nyboer passes 1,000 points in 62-59 loss to Spring Arbor

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For the first time in nearly three months, the Golden Eagles were able to host a women's basketball game on Saturday when they welcomed Spring Arbor to Mol Arena. With her bucket in the second quarter, Shelby Nyboer surpassed 1,000 career points, becoming only the 27th Golden Eagle in history to hit that mark. The game came down to the wire and ultimately ended 62-59 in favor of the Cougars. 

How it happened:
  • Sterling DeGayner came out hot in the first quarter, nailing three three-pointers to boost CU to an early 13-9 lead. Allyson Richards finished the quarter with a fadeaway jumper to give CU a 17-13 advantage. 
  • Shelby Nyboer scored six points in the first three minutes of the second quarter, including the mid-range jumper that put her at the 1,000 career point milestone. 
  • The Golden Eagles led by as many as seven in the second quarter, but led 32-30 at the break. 
  • The Cougars stormed out to an 8-0 run to begin the third quarter, but a 12-0 run for the Golden Eagles boosted them to a 48-44 lead heading into the final frame. 
  • Sterling DeGayner bucketed her fifth three-pointer of the game to put the Golden Eagles ahead 58-55 with 2:45 to play. 
  • The Cougars responded with a 5-0 run to hold a narrow 60-58 lead with less than a minute to go. 
  • Cornerstone had five shot attempts over the course of the final 30 seconds, but Spring Arbor's defense prevailed for a 62-59 road victory.

By the numbers:
17 – Sterling DeGayner and Shelby Nyboer had 17 points apiece. 
5 – DeGayner matched her career high with five three pointers
27 – Nyboer becomes the 27th Golden Eagle in history to score 1,000 points.
3 – Third game of the season decided by three points, including the 65-62 CU victory against Spring Arbor on November 3. 





What's next? 
Cornerstone (3-6) will return to WHAC play on Wednesday with a 5 p.m. road match at Siena Heights.
