Brent Hibbitts will be honored on Saturday in the final regular season game for Cornerstone men's basketball as they take on Concordia at 3 p.m. Hibbitts who spent the last year and a half at CU looks to help the Golden Eagles end the year on a four-game win streak heading into the WHAC Tournament. The Golden Eagles are getting hot at the right time offensively, shooting above 45% in both of last weeks contests with a home win vs. No. 13 Lourdes and a road win at rival Aquinas. CU shot a season high 58.5% in the thrilling 91-88 road win at AQ. Cornerstone is now 17-11, 11-8 WHAC going into the final regular season game of the year vs. Concordia.
Honoring Hibbitts
Cornerstone will host senior day vs. Concordia on Saturday and
Brent Hibbitts serves as the lone senior on the men's basketball team. Hibbitts, the Hudsonville, native has had a unique collegiate career starting at Michigan for three years as a walk-on with the Wolverines where he was coached by John Beiein. After limited playing time at Michigan, Hibbitts had a short stent at Grand Canyon University in Arizona before deciding to come back home to play at Cornerstone. Hibbitts has spent the past year and a half as a Golden Eagle, playing 38 games for the team and starting 15. Despite battling injury his entire college career, Hibbitts has been solid with 3.8 PPG, 4.7 RPG, and 1.6 APG.
Baker nears 1,000
Junior
Tyler Baker continues to near the 1,000 career point mark as he is now just 73 points away with 927 over three years. This season, Baker has recorded a career high 372 points to near the mark. Last week Baker scored 12 and 14 points respectively in the teams two games vs. Lourdes and at Aquinas.
Rodriguez Career High
Junior point guard
Christian Rodriguez was the hero of the win at Aquinas with a game winning three-pointer in the final seconds. The three was Rodriguez's seventh of the game which was a career high as he went 7-10 from deep. Rodriguez had 31 total points in the game, which was one short of his career high set earlier this year against Siena Heights.
Rodriguez surpasses 100 assists
Christian Rodriguez also surpassed 100 assists on the season and now has 101 total in 2019-20 after eight assists this past week. Rodriguez has recorded 100+ assists in each of the last three seasons with a season best 175 as a sophomore. Rodriguez needs just 53 more assists to get to 451 and crack the Golden Eagles top five assist list in program history.
Scouting Concordia
The Cardinals have six freshmen on the roster in 2019-20 and it has shown this season posting just a 9-20, 5-14 WHAC record to sit tied for last in conference play. Concordia has had a rough stretch over the years as they have not ended with a winning record since the 2014-15 season when they went 18-13. Senior Jerald Booker leads the team with 13.8 PPG and 65 assists. Fellow senior Greg Alexander is the only other CUAA player averaging double figures with 12.3 PPG and 4.9 RPG.
