Women's Basketball pulls off 65-62 comeback win at Spring Arbor

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Golden Eagles hit the road on Tuesday evening for a non-conference match up against Spring Arbor. The Cougars controlled most of the game, but the Golden Eagles used a 24-12 fourth quarter to storm back and win the game 65-62. Cornerstone will take an even 2-2 record into Friday afternoon's home game against Taylor.

How it happened:
  • Kaycee Sluiter shot 3-for-3 from the floor in the first quarter but Cornerstone trailed 16-10 after the first frame.
  • Maddison Fulks used two three-pointers and a jumper to score eight consecutive CU points to close out the 2nd quarter trailing 27-23.
  • Cornerstone tied it up at 31-31 early in the third quarter thanks to a layup from Brooke Modderman. Spring Arbor extended their lead to 50-41 heading into the fourth quarter thanks to a late third quarter surge.
  • The Cougars built their lead to as many as ten with a 59-49 advantage with 4:25 to play. Cornerstone rallied back with the game's next six points to make it 59-55 just over a minute later.
  • Sterling DeGayner hit a clutch three-pointer with 1:40 to cut the deficit to just one, 61-60. Following a big defensive stop, a bucket from Kennedy Helderop gave the Golden Eagles a 62-61 lead.
  • With 14.5 seconds to go in a tie game, Helderop split a pair of free throws at the line, to give CU a 63-62 edge. The CU Defense came up with a big steal from Allyson Richards, which was followed by a foul to send her to the line, where she hit both free throws to make it 65-62 with under 10 seconds to go. The Cougars were able to get a three-point attempt off at the buzzer, but the ball rimmed out.
