GARY, Ind. – The Women's Basketball team hit the road on Saturday to open their season at IU-Northwest. The Golden Eagles came out firing, going 10-for-21 from beyond the arc en route to a 69-66 victory.
Sterling DeGayner led the way for CU with 21 points. The team will look to build on their first win on Thursday when they return to the state of Indiana on Thursday to take on Bethel.
How it happened:
- Sterling DeGayner exploded for five three pointers in the first quarter alone, and added a jumper in the final seconds of the quarter to boost the Golden Eagles to a 26-17 advantage after the first frame
- Cornerstone built their lead to as many as 13 in the second quarter before the Red Hawks stormed back to cut the deficit to just one. After the second quarter, the Golden Eagles held a 44-37 lead.
- Cornerstone maintained their lead throughout the third quarter, albeit never by more than seven points. The RedHawks cut the deficit and trailed by just two after three quarters, 58-56.
- With 8:27 to play in the game, IU-Northwest took their first lead of the game since the early goings of the first quarter. The RedHawks built that lead to 66-62 with less than two minutes to play.
- The Golden Eagles scored the final seven points of the game to win it 69-66, thanks to a go ahead bucket from Allyson Richards with 30 seconds to go, and a clutch steal and breakaway layup for Layna Steele in the game's final seconds.

What's next?
The Golden Eagles will return to the state of Indiana on Thursday to take on Bethel at 7 p.m. ET before returning home to host Huntington next Saturday in the home opener.
