VAI Purple Community game highlights the week for Men’s Basketball

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone will play in yet another meaningful game on Wednesday to cap off a three-game home stand as the team hosts their annual Van Andel Institute (VAI) Purple Community game where all proceeds go toward VAI cancer research. CU will wear purple game shirts that are also on sale for $10 as well as be introduced with the name of someone in their life who has been affected by cancer. CU will also play at receiving votes UM-Dearborn as part of their two-game week. Both contests will have live video, audio, and stats available at cugoldeneagles.com.

Last Week Recap
After winning a rescheduled WHAC game vs. Aquinas, the Golden Eagles earned their third straight victory 79-62 over Lawrence Tech to begin the second half of conference play. 79 points is the highest scoring output for the Golden Eagles in 13 games and the 48.5% mark from the field is the teams best shooting percentage since November 20 at Siena Heights. Cornerstone continues conference play vs. Siena Heights and at UM-Dearborn this week as there are just nine regular season games remaining. 
 
Van Andel Institute Purple Games
Cornerstone will be hosting their annual VAI Purple Games to support cancer research. All proceeds for the event will go to the Van Andel Institute Purple Community. Shirts can be purchased at the game for $10. There are other ways to give including entering the Grand Rapids Griffins, West Michigan Whitecaps, or Grand Rapids Drive raffle, and donating to the pie in the face jar contest. The women's game will take place at 5:30 p.m. and the men will follow at 7:30 p.m. Each athlete will be introduced during the game with the name of someone they will be playing for who has been effected by cancer. 
 
Swiper No Swiping
Christian Rodriguez tied a career high in steals with four in the win vs. Lawrence Tech. Rodriguez is the only Golden Eagle to record 4+ steals in the program since Michael McLaughlin in 2017 also recorded four. McLaughlin recorded 234 career steals in his career and Rodriguez currently sits at 83 over two and a half seasons. 

History vs. Siena Heights 
Head Coach Kim Elders and the Golden Eagles have dominated the Saints of late, winning 14 straight for the teams longest active win streak vs. any team in the WHAC. In recordable history, Cornerstone is 44-34 against SHU including a 38-23 mark under Coach E. 
 
History vs. UM-Dearborn
CU has struggled of late against the Wolverines going just 1-3 in their last four meetings. All-time, CU is 52-6 against UM-D and 49-5 under Coach E. 
 
Scouting the Saints
Defending WHAC Player of the Week Keith Jordan Jr. and the 9-11, 6-5 WHAC Saints are riding a three game win streak as they head into the game at CU. SHU protects the rim well with three players with 20+ blocks to rank seventh in the nation with 94 total. The senior duo of Demarco Dickerson and Keith Jordan Jr. each average 17+ PPG and 6+ RPG. Dickerson also leads the team with 64 assists this season. Last time the two teams played, CU pulled out a 75-74 victory in Adrian as they now look for the season sweep vs. Siena Heights.
 
Scouting the Wolverines
After being ranked as high as 21st in the country this season, the Wolverines have struggled losing three straight games, most recently 65-39 at Indiana Tech. UM-D only averages 71.9 PPG as they have struggled shooting just like the Golden Eagles, but are holding opponents to 65.8 PPG. Forward Jason Gigliotti leads the team with 13.4 PPG and 8.9 RPG this season.
