GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone had the lead for only about four minutes of the game, but a season high 25 points from
Tyler Baker helped CU come from behind and steal a 78-74 win over Hope College in the first day of the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic. The Golden Eagles are now 8-3 on the year as they will take on the other MIAA foe Calvin University tomorrow at 8 p.m. inside Mol Arena.
What you need to know?
- Hope hit some early threes to get out to a 10-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game.
- A pair of free throws from Cory Ainsworth gave CU their first lead since the opening bucket at 11-10 with 13:19 to go in the half.
- Two more threes from Hope helped spur the Flying Dutchmen to a 10-0 run to take a 25-15 lead.
- Riley Lewis hit a three to give Hope their largest lead of 11 at 28-17 with 4:57 to go in the half.
- An and one by Gabe Meriwether in the final minute of the half capped off an 18-6 run for the Golden Eagles to regain a 35-34 lead.
- A foul with under a second left gave Hope two free throws to take a 36-35 lead into the break.
- After a slow start offensively for both teams to start the second half, Hope increased their lead back to 10 on a three from Calvin Hackert.
- A free throw by Hope brought the lead back to a game high 11 with 9:52 to play.
- Free throws helped Cornerstone chip away at the lead, cutting it to just two points multiple times down the stretch.
- Gabe Meriwether hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 68 with 3:09 to play.
- Tyler Baker scored nine points in the final 2:36 to play including a huge three pointer to give CU a 77-74 lead.
- Hope had a chance in the final 10 seconds to tie the game with a three, but they could not hit the bucket as they were forced to foul Kyle Hayes in the final second as he went 1-2 at the line to win 78-74 in the GRSHOF Opener.

- Both teams hit 20+ free throws in the game, as CU went 26-32 and Hope went 22-33.
- Kyle Hayes (5) and Cory Ainsworth (3) combined for eight of the Golden Eagles seasons high 10 blocks in the game. Hayes was one short from tying a career high.
- Carter Nyp led the Golden Eagles with nine rebounds.
- Drew Knickerbocker came off the bench to record a career high 13 points.
