DEARBORN, Mich. – The no. 6 Golden Eagles would lose a heartbreaker after UM-Dearborn's Mafiaion Jooyner would hit a three and get fouled to give the Wolverines the 67-66 upset of Cornerstone. CU struggled all game, trailing by as many as 18 as well as not holding a lead until there was just 4:35 remaining. With the loss, Cornerstone is 15-5, 8-2 WHAC as they return to Mol Arena on Saturday to host no. 25 Indiana Tech at 3 p.m.
What you need to know
- Cornerstone struggled offensively in the first eight minutes of the half, scoring just six points on 3-12 shooting to trail 18-6.
- An and one bucket by Gabe Meriwether would help CU cut the deficit to as low as seven in the first half, but UM-Dearborn would score 13 of the last 17 in the period to lead by a game high 16 points at the break.
- Kyle Hayes and Sam Vander Sluis combined for 15 of the Golden Eagles 27 first half points.
- Sam Vander Sluis scored the first six points of the second half for CU, but the team still trailed by 15 with 15:47 left in the game.
- Gabe Meriwether and Riley Costen would spark a Golden Eagle 8-0 run to cut the CU deficit to seven with 11:40 left.
- Cornerstone would go on a 15-0 run that saw a pair of threes from Riley Costen, giving the Golden Eagles their first lead at 62-57.
- CU would lead by three with under 10 seconds remaining, but a four-point play by the Wolverines would give them the 67-66 upset victory.
