No. 10 Men’s Basketball begins 2019 with WHAC contest vs. Concordia

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles return home for the first time in nearly a month beginning 2019 with a conference game vs. Concordia. Cornerstone has won three straight including two wins in Miami Gardens Florida last week. CU will tipoff against the Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. on January 2nd inside Mol Arena with live video/stats/audio available at cugoldeneagles.com/watch.

Vander Sluis Breaks Rebounding Record
Senior Sam Vander Sluis had a big week in Florida moving his career rebounding total to 1,267. Vander Sluis is now the Cornerstone program leader in rebounds as well as the WHAC all-time leader. Sam is averaging 15.7 rebounds per game this season, 5.07 more than the next best in the conference. 
 
Three Point Shooting
Cornerstone hit 17 of 27 three's in a massive win at Florida Memorial, the most made three's since February 9, 2005 where they also hit 17 at UM-Dearborn. 
 
Baker's Big First Half
Redshirt Sophomore Tyler Baker could not miss in the first half at Florida Memorial, recording 24 first half points on 8-9 shooting (6-7 behind the arc) to help the Golden Eagles to a season high 56 first half points. Baker would play minimal minutes in the second half, finishing the game with a season second best 27 points in 19 total minutes. 
 
Scouting Concordia
The Cardinals have gotten off to a slow start in 2018-19 with a 3-13, 2-6 WHAC record. CUAA has lost each of their last four games including a pair of losses to no. 2 Morningside College. Senior Jalen Thompson has led Concordia all year long, averaging a team best 15.3 PPG and 5.1 RPG. Senior Jared McDaniel has also made a significant impact for CUAA, ranking second on the team in points per game with 12.1 to go along with a team high 71 assists. Outside of those two seniors, Concordia is a very young team with eight freshmen on the varsity roster. The Cardinals are coached by Ricky Yahn who is in his sixth season. 
 
History vs. the Cardinals
Head Coach Kim Elders has been dominant against the Cardinals winning eight straight matchups and going 50-5 in his 25 seasons at CU. The Golden Eagles last played Concordia in the 2017-18 WHAC Tournament Quarterfinal where they recorded a 78-62 win inside Mol Arena.
