Huge first half carries No. 1 Men’s Hoops to 70-57 win over No. 23 UM-Dearborn

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone took a 43-23 lead into the locker room and led by as many as 24 late in the second half to pick up their 16th straight win as they defeated No. 23 UM-Dearborn on Wednesday night. The victory lifts the No. 1 ranked Golden Eagles to 16-2 overall and 8-0 in the WHAC as they will return to Mol Arena on Saturday to host Rochester (Mich.) at 3 p.m.

Game Flow
In a battle among two of the top three teams in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, the Golden Eagles raced out to a quick 10-2 lead on seven points from Kyle Steigenga and three from Riley Costen. That run was finished off by an alley-oop dunk from Costen to Steigenga and the lead would eventually grow to 12 (24-12) with just over 10 minutes gone by in the first half. After the Wolverines cut the lead to 10, CU exploded for a 13-2 run over the final 2:45 to put them up by 20 at the break.

The margin grew to 23 midway through the second half but 14 second half turnovers kept things in the high teens for the Wolverines. CU did have one late push to go up by 25 on another flush from Steigenga but UMD ended the game on a 17-2 run to bring the final gap to just 13 at 70-57.

Say What?
"We played a great first half but then got sloppy with the basketball in the second and turned it over too many times. Defensively we did a great job on their shooters" – Head Coach Kim Elders

By the Numbers
26 – Kyle Steigenga scored a game-high 26 points on 11/14 shooting
10/25 – CU finished the night 40% from behind the arc (Bradshaw and Steigenga each made three)
37-30 – Cornerstone out-rebounded their 17th opponent in 18 games
17 – Turnovers for the Golden Eagles, 14 of them coming in the second half

Up Next
Cornerstone will stay at home, where they have won 21 consecutive games, on Saturday when they host league-newcomer Rochester College at 3 p.m.
